Update #24 Race #48 By Kenny Johnson 09 Nov 2011
Our season is now complete & we finished up at Atomic Speedway (formerly called K-C Speedway). Our night didn’t start out too well, cause when I qualified I drove it in turn 1 too hard and went off the track in turn 2. That buried us in heat #4, starting 7th. The car drove super, both high and low and we got the heat race win. On the pill redraw we started 6th in the feature. We passed our way to 3rd on a long green flag run, but when a caution came out, our right rear tire gave up and our car just didn’t take off and we wound up finishing 5th.
We also got to race Jim Helterbran’s #27 hobby stock. Jamey Adams helped get us the ride. We started 10th in our heat race and finished 3rd. We started 6th in the feature and passed to 3rd. We passed for 2nd a couple different times, but each time the yellow came out. But at about the half way point we got a flat tire. Had a very good car, but bad luck sturck us. I want to thank Jim and Jamey for allowing to race the car and all of their help!
Here is how our season turned out. We set fast time 9 times and now hold the track record at Muskingum County and Atomic Speedway. We won 30 heat races and 17 features. we finished 2nd-7 times, 3rd-3 times, 4th-5 times, 5th-1 time, 6th-1 time, 7th-1 time, 9th-2 times,
10th-1 time, 11th-2 times, 14th-1 time, DNF-5 times, DNQ-1. A pretty successful year, but we can identify something areas of improvement and we’ll work on that for 2012.
I want to thank Tim Cooper and Chad Nelson for giving up their summers to help. Without them, none of this would be possible. Also want to thank Todd Lambiotte and Jason Canepari for their help as well. Special thanks goes out to all of our sponsors, whether it be a business or individuals that provide us support, every little bit helps and is greatly appreciated!

Update #23 Race #46 & #47 By Kenny Johnson 23 Oct 2011
To get you up to speed, we went to KC Speedway for the Dirt Track World Championship for $3,000 to win. We got rained out on Thursday so we started at 2:00 on Friday. They had 90 some mods and we set fast time in our group and went on to win the heat race. This would start us 3rd in the feature. I was very happy with the car and we had high expectations for the feature. The late models got rained out on Friday night, so they started at 4:00 on Saturday. Our feature was run before theirs, but from what we had seen in their heat races, the track was a one lane racetrack on the bottom. So when we went out, that is exactly what we had and I missed the set up. I held on as long as I could and when I was getting freight trained I pulled it in on lap 22. Very, very disappointed and it was not the weekend I was looking for. To top it off, as soon as I got back in the pits, Tim and Chad had everything ready to load and told me Kim was in the hospital. She thought she had broken her foot, but as it turned out she had a severe sprain and spent 3 days on crutches. She is heeling up just fine.
This past weekend we went to Jackson County Speedway for $1,000 to win. We set 4th fastest time and won our heat race. They redrew the top 2 in each heat and there were 5 heat races. Yep, we drew the #10 starting spot. I was a little concerned if we could do any passing. But we had a really good car and we passed our way to a 4th place finish. We really needed another caution to possibly have a shot at the leader. But we’ll take that run!
This weekend we have 2 options, either Jackson County Speedway or Atomic Speedway (formerly KC Speedway) on Saturday night. At this time we are undecided. To keep up to date the night of the race, follow us on Facebook under Kenny Johnson Motorsports.

Update #22 Race #44 & #45 By Kenny Johnson 10 Oct 2011
On Saturday, Sept. 24th we went to KC Speedway and they had 48 cars. We set fast time and had to start 4th in the heat race. The track had a pretty good cushion in turn 2 and I jumped the cushion a few times, which got me behind. We finished 3rd in the heat to start us 9th in the feature. Again the cushion and the wall ate my lunch and we finished 3rd in the feature. Needless to say, I’ll be putting a new deck and body on it before we race again.
Races were cancelled on 9/30 and 10/1, so that ended the AMRA points and we have unofficially captured another AMRA National Points Championship! Thanks to all my sponsors and my crew.
Saturday, Oct. 8th we went to KC Speedway for the last Road Warrior Tour race. They had 38 cars and we set fast time. So yet again we started 4th in the heat. The track slickened off in turn 3 and 4 a little more than I expected and I did not make any changes to the car. I had to go to the bottom, but the high side gave the leaders the momentum they needed, so we had to settle for 3rd. Again started 9th in the feature and on the 3rd lap a car spun in turn 1 and I had to turn right and go off the track to avoid the accident. But when I came back on the track, there was no accident, no yellow flag or anything. We came back on the track in 18th or so. We went green until lap 22 and we were in 8th place. The green came out and I passed for 7th and on the next lap I passed for 6th going down the back chute, and then passed for 5th off of turn 4, but the yellow came out putting us back in 7th. With 6 laps to go, I felt like we could salvage a tope 5, but when the yellow came out the 6th place car decided to run high, which allowed the car behind me to go low. I was tapping the rear bumper of the guy in front of me, but with the 8th place car now advancing past me and working on the 6th place car, he could not move down. When he got passed he dropped low and I was able to pass him, but there was only 1 lap left. So we brought home a 7th place finish. I was very disappointed. Although, somewhat of a positive, I did find 2 things wrong that was hindering the handling of the car. So we’ll get them taken care of this week.
This weekend is a big weekend for us. We race Thursday night at KC Speedway our qualifications, heat races and consi’s. Then we will run our feature on Saturday night with the late models Dirt Track World Championship. So we hope to see you there! Update #21 Race #42 & #43 By Kenny Johnson 18 Sep 2011
Friday we went to Beckley for $1600 to win. They had 23 cars and we set 2nd fast time. That put us in a dash and they did a redraw for our starting position. Luck was on our side and we drew a 1. We got the dash win and that started us on the pole of the feature. We ran a marathon feature and had a hard fought battle with Andy Bond but were able to hold on for win #16.
Saturday we went to Skyline for a Road Warrior Tour race and the track was slick, so I was concerned for how we would do. We set 11th fast time and that started us on the outside pole, because they invert the top 4. We made a couple of changes for the heat and it worked. We won the heat in which that put us in the 4 car dash. We drew pills for starting and we drew the last pill, #4 and started 4th. We shot to the high side of 1 and 2 and took the lead in 3 and 4 and went on to win the dash. The car was pretty good and we started on the pole of the feature. We took the lead and stretched it out until a caution flew just past half way. Our tires must have cooled down some because we lost some of our drive and Chris Stotts passed us. We moved up to the high side and were moving in the right direction. Lap traffic became an issue and we chose the right line and passed Chris back and went on to get win #17. This ties our wins for last year and with any luck, we can get a few more.
This weekend we will be going back to one of our favorite tracks, KC Speedway. So we hope to see you there! To keep up to date the night of the race, follow us on Facebook under Kenny Johnson Motorsports.

Update #20 Race #40 & #41 By Kenny Johnson 11
Sep 2011
Skyline had cancelled for Friday, so
we headed back to Beckley. They had 16 cars and track
conditions were less than favorable. We were in the
first group to qualify and our times were 2 seconds off
from what should have been normal. We were 6th fastest
and started 3rd in the heat in which we finished 3rd. I
had a little different set up on the car from the
previous week and it just wasn’t what we needed. So we
switched it back and started 6th in the feature. We ran
3rd quite a while and at the end it was a 4 way battle
for the lead. Unfortunately we wound up finishing 4th.
Car was good and the racing was pretty good as well.
Saturday we went to KC Raceway and because a lot of
other tracks were closed down, KC had 48 modifieds show
up. We set fast time and a new track record of 15.226.
Car was HOOKED UP! At KC they invert the top 4 in each
heat and we started 4th and got the heat win. Chad drew
us a #1 pill for the feature. We took the lead on the
first lap and went on to get win #15. The car was the
best it has ever been there. I also want to thank all of
the Highside Fans for making us feel so welcome there.
This week we will be at Beckley on Friday for $1,600
to win and Skyline on Saturday for a Road Warrior Tour
race, so we hope to see you there. To keep up to date
the night of the race, follow us on Facebook under Kenny

Update #19 Race #38 & #39 By Kenny Johnson 05 Sep 2011
Friday we went to Beckley for the first time this year. They only had 13 cars and we set 4th fastest time. We won the 2nd heat to start us on the front row outside of the feature beside Andy Bond. Unfortunately, Andy broke on the first lap and took some other cars out with him. We were able to get the win over Joe Cox and Booger Garnes to make our 14th win of the year.
Saturday we went to Ohio Valley Speedway for the Faster Pastor race in which our Pastor, Mark Houser, participated in. Mark’s car had gotten a broken axle and made it very difficult to drive, but he drove it to the finish. We started on the outside pole of the 3rd heat and won the heat. I drew a #7 pill to start us on the outside pole alongside Andy Bond yet again. This time Andy would take the early lead and pull away from us while we maintained 2nd. I stayed on the high side which proved not to be the groove of choice for me. I finally moved to the bottom when I dropped back to 4th. I was attempting to advance and I got the car a little sideways off of turn 2 and a car behind me stopped to avoid hitting me. So they charged me with the caution and I went to the tail. There were only a few laps left and I finished a disappointing 14th.
This week we will be at Skyline on Friday and KC on Saturday, so we hope to see you there. To keep up to date the night of the race, follow us on Facebook under Kenny Johnson Motorsports.

Update #18 Race #36 & #37 By Kenny Johnson 02 Sep 2011
Friday was a Road Warrior Tour race at Skyline Speedway for $1,200 to win. They had 38 cars and we qualified 5th fastest to start us 3rd in the first heat. RWT inverts the top 4 in each heat, and then take the winner to a dash. We won the heat and drew #4 for the dash. Only 4 cars were in the dash and we went on to win the dash as well. This started us on the pole of the feature and we were able to lead all 30 laps and win. Track was racey all night long and I stayed hooked up on the bottom. That made win #13 for the year.
Saturday we went to Ohio Valley Speedway for their Topless race also paying $1,200 to win. We set fast time and won our heat and Coop drew us a good pill to start on the pole of the feature. 3 laps into the race our right lower ball joint sheared, causing us a DNF. Not what we wanted, but things like that come with racing.
This weekend will be to Beckley Speedway on Friday and Ohio Valley on Saturday for the Faster Pastor race. My Preacher, Mark Houser, will be racing in it again this year. Keep watch on Facebook and Tim will keep everyone posted on how we progress through out the night. We hope to see you there!

Update #17 Race #34 & #35 By Kenny Johnson 21 Aug 2011
Friday we went to Jackson County Speedway in Jackson, OH. We set fast time and started on the pole of the heat race. We took the early lead, but on lap one, I looped it while leading. I went to the tail and worked my way back to 3rd and was inching back in on the leaders. With about 2 to go a caution came out and Brian Whiteman went to the pits while running 2nd. So that put us in 2nd with a 2 lap shootout with Rob Stambaugh. We took the one to go signal and as we were entering turn 1, the lights went out and I mean OUT! It was pitch black dark and we were all lucky not to have some tore up racecars. Lights came back on and we finished 2nd. We started 3rd in the feature and dropped to 4th and probably had a 4th place finish at best. But Rob Stambaugh spun and needless to say we got collected and got tore up and wound up with a DNF. On a good note, I got to drive a Hobby Stock for Jamey Adams and we set 2nd fast time and won our heat race. We started on the outside pole beside John Powell. John took the early lead, but we kept the pressure on and made the pass and went on to get a win in the #42J Adams Chassis. It was a lot of fun to drive.
Saturday we went to KC and we set 2nd fast time. They invert the top 4 in each heat, so we started 4th. There was an incident on the 1st lap that caused Mike Long to crash. It appeared I was the cause of it and Mike was not happy. I totally understand and have passed on my apologies, but that doesn’t fix his car, nor give him his spot back in the heat. We went on to win the heat and Chad drew us a 1 to start the pole of the feature. We went on to take the win, which made win #12 for the year. Again, I got to drive for Jamey Adams and we started outside pole of the heat race and won the heat. We started on the pole of the feature, right beside car owner Jamey Adams. Jamey took the early lead and I tried working him on the bottom. But finally had to put it on the high side to pass Jamey and get win #2 on the weekend in the Hobby Stock. I want to thank Jamey and his crew for allowing me to drive, I had a blast!
This weekend will be at Skyline on Friday for a Road Warrior Tour race and on Saturday, we’ll go to Ohio Valley for their Topless race paying $1,200 to win. Keep watch on Facebook and Tim will keep everyone posted on how we progress through out the night. We hope to see you there!

Update #16 Race #27 thru #33 By Kenny Johnson 19 Aug 2011
I have no excuse for not updating my updates. But since I haven’t, it has told me that fans do get on here and read them to find out how good or bad we have done. So that is good to know and I’ll get back in the routine of updating them weekly!
7/22 we went to Skyline and started 5 in our heat and finished 4th. The car just wasn’t what it had been. We started 11th in the feature and finished 11th. We have struggled really bad in the slick and I have no clue why. Ever since our big wreck at I-77 over July 4th weekend, we have not run well in the slick. 7/23 we went to KC Speedway and set fast time, started 4th in the heat and finished 2nd. Started 4th in the feature and finished 2nd. The car still wasn’t what it needed to be.
7/29 we went to Skyline for a Road Warrior Tour race. We had 6th fastest time but they inverted the top 4 in each heat, so we started 3rd and finished 2nd. The car wasn’t too bad. But we got rained out.
7/30 we went to Thunder Mountain in Hanover, WV. It was a 3 ½ hour tow. They were paying $1,500 to win and we had 3rd fast time. Started 2nd in our heat and finished 2nd. Started 3rd in feature and ran 3rd for a long time, but eventually got passed and finished 4th. Got home at 6:35 a.m. . . long night!
8/6 went to Jackson County Speedway and set 3rd fast time. Started on the pole of the heat and finished 2nd. Started 5th in the feature and finished 3rd. Car needed to be better and we might have found something.
8/12 went back to Jackson and started 2nd in heat and won. Started 2nd in feature and won it also. Car was pretty good, but the driver needs to make some changes.
8/13 went to Ohio Valley and started on the pole of the heat and won and started on the pole of the feature and finished 2nd. Car was good, but was just a little lazy off the corner.
I want to thank Tim, Chad, and Todd for all of the hard work and dedication, without them, I couldn’t do it. Also want to thank Jason for coming to help on setting the car up. The car has improved over the last few weeks.
This weekend will be at Skyline on Friday and I am undecided on where we will be going on Saturday. Keep watch on Facebook and Tim will keep everyone posted once we make our decision. We hope to see you there!

Update #15 Race #23, #24, #25 & #26 By Kenny Johnson 18 Jul 2011
Sorry for the delay in getting the updates out, I got a little behind. July 8th we were supposed to go to Skyline, but Mother Nature had different plans and Skyline cancelled. So we headed to one of our favorites, Brad McCown’s Jackson County Speedway. They had 15 cars and we were to start 5th, but the 3rd place car requested the tail, so we started 3rd. we went on to win the heat and Coop drew us #2 on the redraw alongside Travis Dickson. Travis took the lead off of turn two, but we passed him in turn 3 and 4 and went on to get win #9. Track was awesome and they are improving every week.
Tim and I stayed at Sean Schobelock’s house Friday night and got up Saturday to wash the car before going to Coughlin’s to display the car. Sean, Staci and Toby kept us up all night around the camp fire, and then Sean had us up at the crack of dawn working on our car. We took the car to Coughlin’s and had a good time there. Then we went to Rooster’s to eat with several fans from KC Speedway. After that it was off to the races at KC Speedway. We started 4th in our heat race and finished 2nd to start us 5th in the feature. Unfortunately we didn’t get to make it a lap. Got caught up in a spin and tore the entire right side off including the roof and a brand new right rear tire. So back to the sheet metal work yet again! Thanks to Sean & Staci for their hospitality and to Toby for pit crewing for us!
Friday July 15th we went to Skyline and started 4th in the heat race, took the early lead but got passed by Ricky Venham on the last lap to finish 2nd. Started 5th in the feature and ran 6th the first part of the race and wound up finishing 11th. I tried a different set up and I think it was proven not to be tried ever again!
Saturday we went back to I-77 to try and get the win that eluded us the last time we were there. We started the night off good by drawing pill #2 to start us on the pole of heat #1. We won the heat and started on the pole of the feature beside Ricky Venham. We went on to get the win over Ricky Venham for win #10 of the year. Although we have had some disappointing nights, we can’t complain about our season thus far.
This weekend will be at Skyline on Friday and I am undecided on where we will be going on Saturday. Keep watch on Facebook and Tim will keep everyone posted once we make our decision. We hope to see you there!

Update #14 Race #20, #21 & #22 By Kenny Johnson 06 Jul 2011
Friday we went to Skyline and I drew pill #25 to start us 5th in the het race. We won heat #2 to start us on the outside pole along side Vince Conrad. We took the early lead and I was running the middle of the track. The next thing I know, here came Andy Bond on the highside and took the lead. I shot to the Highside as well and that line was quicker. Andy and I was nose to tail and unless he bobbled, there was no way I was going to pass him. With about 6 to go there was a caution and I dove low and tried to pass Andy, but after 3 or 4 laps he started inching away. I went back to the top to try and chase him down and overheated my right rear. JP Roberts passed me on the last lap to give us a 3rd place finish. The track was pretty nice all night long, with multiple grooves.
Saturday we went to Ohio Valley and drew pill #10 to start us on the outside pole of heat #2. We went on to win the heat, but the pill redraw put us starting 7th in the feature. We went on to get the win, but I only had to pass 2 cars to do it, for the others seem to take themselves out. Hate to see that, but we’ll take win #8!
Sunday we went back to I-77. We qualified a 14.10 to give us fast time. Started on the pole of the heat and won it to start us on the pole of the feature along side Vince Conrad. Vince took the early lead, but we eventually passed him and worked our way into lap traffic. My rear brakes had faded for I was running the cushion and was driving it in hard and using a lot of brake. So when it came time to maneuver in lap traffic, I couldn’t get the car turned. Vince passed me back in lap traffic. Once I got by the lap traffic, I went back to the high side and chased Vince back down. As I came off of turn 2 I got a heck of a run. Got up along side Vince down the back chute and just before we got into turn 3, I ended up in the wall, tearing up quite a bit of stuff. We limped it across the line to a 6th place finish. Have quite a bit of work done, but still have more to do to finish it.
We will be ready for the weekend.
This weekend will be at Skyline on Friday and KC Speedway on Saturday. We hope to see you there!

Update #13 Race #18 & #19 By Kenny Johnson 26 Jun 2011
Friday we went to Skyline Speedway for the 3rd Annual Greg Schilling Memorial Race. This is not only a huge race for the modifieds in our area, but it has sentimental meaning for me, because Greg and I were good friends. 51 cars were on hand and we qualified 4th fastest in our group. The track was really slick right from the start and we started 4th in our heat and I spun it out. I went to the tail and pretty much could not advance any further. I could tell we were missing something and I just couldn’t get the car adjusted. We started the tail of the consi and advanced a few spots, but no where near enough to make the show. So we got our first DNQ for the year. We were able to raise some money for the Greg Schilling Memorial Fund and that was the most important thing for the night.
Saturday we went to I-77 for a $1,000 to win Road Warrior Tour race. They had 25 cars and we set fast time. RWT now inverts the top 4 in each heat race. So we started 4th in the heat and past Booger Garnes on the last lap for the win. That put us in the dash and drew the outside pole for that. We won the dash to start us on the pole of the feature. Vince Conrad took the early lead but we managed to sneak around him on the high side and we went on to get the win! That was win #7 on the year and hoping for more!
Next weekend will be a 3 day weekend for racing. Our tentative plans are Skyline on Friday, Ohio Valley on Saturday and I-77 on Sunday. We hope to see you there!

Update #12 Race #16 & #17 By Kenny Johnson 20 Jun 2011
I want to wish all of the dad’s out there, Happy Father’s Day. I got to spend most of the day with my dad. I also want to send condolences out to the McVey family for the loss of Pappy McVey. I will miss him!
Friday we went to Skyline and they had 25 cars. I drew pill #24 to start us 5th in the heat race. In hot laps the track was extremely slick and smooth. We made changes in the car to accommodate these conditions. Well after all of the hot laps & qualifying were over the turns rutted up and made for fast racing. We did not change the car back and it hindered us slightly but we got the heat race win. Feature time rolled around and we were starting 2nd along side of Andy Bond. Our car was working really well and we went on to get win #6 on the season.
Saturday we went to KC Speedway and they only had 16 cars, my pill draw skills have yet to prove themselves, for I drew #57 to start us 5th in the heat. We finished 2nd to Jeremy Berwanger and this would start us 3rd in the feature. Jeremy jumped out to the early lead and we got to 2nd but had nothing for Jeremy and had to settle for 2nd. Not a bad weekend, but not two wins like we’d like to have. But I’m not necessarily complaining!
This Friday is the 3rd Annual Greg Schilling Memorial at Skyline Speedway. If at all possible, I hope everyone can make it to this event. Not only is it a good race, but it’s also a fund raiser for the Greg Schilling Memorial Fund. Saturday we will be going to I-77 Speedway. We hope to see you there!

Update #11 Race #14 & #15 By Kenny Johnson 13 Jun 2011
To give everyone an update on Cassidy, she has improved by leaps and bounds this past week. We take her back to Cincinnati on Monday (the 13th) to get the Dr’s opinion. Thanks to everyone for your prayers and concerns.
Friday we went to Skyline and they had 25 cars. I drew pill #20 to start us 4th in the heat race. The track was pretty racey and we went on to win the heat. This started us 3rd in the feature. Jess Hartman was on the pole and Robbie Evans was on the outside pole. Jess took the early lead and we followed. We finally got under Jess off of turn 2 and we went on to get win #5 for the year.
Saturday we went to Muskingum County Speedway and they had 31 cars for $1,500 to win. I drew a pill #1, but what a waste of a pill draw for qualifying. We qualified 7th fastest to start us on the outside pole of the 3rd heat. We went on to get the heat win, but had to draw another pill and I drew pill #7 to start us 7th in the feature. We were running third until the last lap and we got passed and finished 4th. Now, I left out quite a few details with the track conditions, rain, and rain out features and so on. But the gist of it is we got home at 5:10 am Sunday morning.
This weekend, we plan to go to Skyline on Friday and to KC on Saturday. We hope to see you there!

Update #10 Race #12 & #13 By Kenny Johnson 05 Jun 2011
Kim and I want to thank everyone for the prayers and concerns for Cassidy. Her leg is heeling, but mentally is not making the progress we had hoped. Keep praying for a full recovery.
Friday we went to Skyline’s season opener. It’s hard to believe its June and they are just now getting their season opener in. I drew pill #24 and this started us 6th in the 2nd heat. We got the heat win and started outside front row of the feature beside Andy Bond. The track was slick and was a bottom groove track. We got shuffled back to 5th before I could get to the bottom. Once we did, we passed our way back to 2nd but Andy had to big of a lead to chase down and the race went caution free and we settled for 2nd.
Saturday we went to KC and they had 27 cars. I drew pill #70 to start us 8th in the heat race. My pill draw abilities really stink! We jumped to 3rd pretty quick and got right behind Bud Frazier and Bob Crace Jr. Going down the back chute a caution came out and Bud and I was not aware of it, Bob slowed down and Bud and I collided. Unfortunately Bud got a flat, but we were able to keep going. We finished 2nd to Bob Crace and that would start us 5th in the feature. We knew the groove would be on the top and we would have to make the bottom work. Well, we did just that and passed our way to the lead and then jumped to the high side! It was real exciting to win for all of the “Highside Fans” and it was dad’s first trip to KC in over a year and it was good to have him in victory lane.
We plan to go to Skyline on Friday and to Zanesville on Saturday for $1,500 to win. We hope to see you there!

Update #9 Race #8, #9, #10 & #11 By Kenny Johnson 31 May 2011
Well I’m a little behind on the updates, but this should get us back up to speed!
On Friday the 20th we went to McCown’s Jackson County Speedway where we started 3rd in the heat race and we went on to get the win. But they do the pill redraw for the feature line up and the worst pill is 8 and of course, you guessed it, we started 8th. We worked our way to 3rd and started working on 2nd and the leader. I got under 2nd place runner and he got sideways. We saved him from spinning out, but it caved in our entire right side and we eventually got a flat tire. We came in and changed it with about 8 laps to go and went to the tail. We did manage to get a 4th place finish.
Saturday, the 21st we went to Muskingum County Speedway. They had 25 cars and in qualifying we set a new track record with a 17.10. Car was real good and we started on the pole of the 3rd heat beside Bart Hartman driving one of Jr. Nolan’s car. Bart had the preferred line and we raced him close for about the first 4 laps and we overheated our right rear tire. We did finish in 2nd, which started us 4th in the feature. Made a few small changes and put 3 new tires on and went to the chute. As they called for us to go on the track our left rear tire was flat. We came in and got is changed, but they said we had to go to the tail. We passed several cars pretty quick, but I was driving mad and yes, I drove off the end of turn #1. This is something I have done numerous times over the years at Muskingum County. I came back on down the back chute and had lost all of the positions we had gained. So now, I’m even madder and I go into turn 1 again and get the right side tires off the track, so I said the heck with it and headed to the pits with a DNF.
Saturday the 28th we went to Ohio Valley Speedway and we started on the pole of the 1st heat and won it. For the pill redraw we started 6th in the feature. We moved into 3rd quickly and were just waiting for an opening between the leader and 2nd place. But a racing incident occurred and I got into Tom Sigler’s left rear quarter. I was sent to the tail and we wound up with a 9th place finish. All in all disappointing for a Valley run, but that’s racing.
Sunday, May 29th was my mom’s birthday, so Happy Birthday Mom, love ya! We went to McCown’s Jackson County Speedway for a $2,000 to win show. Cooper drew us pill #50 and that caused him to fire himself. That put us starting 7th in the first heat, but luck would strike and we wound up starting 3rd due to some bad luck for some others. We wound up finishing 2nd in the heat and that put us in the redraw. We drew pill #2 to start us on the outside pole alongside Kevin Morehouse. We took the early lead and thought we just might have it, but Kevin made one heck of a move and went to the outside one car width and it paid off. He got the win and we finished a respectable 2nd. The track roughness has improved and I’d expect that we will see more improvements as the year goes along.
We plan to go to Skyline on Friday and KC on Saturday this weekend. We are looking forward to seeing several of the Highside fans at KC.
On a sad note, Cassidy (Kim’s youngest daughter) was in an accident this weekend that gave her 2nd degree burns on the back of her left leg. She had been a real trooper thru the entire ordeal but does have some discomfort. She was brought to the Shriner’s Children’s Burn Center in Cincinnati. Please keep her and Kim in your prayers. Thanks!

Update #8 Race #7 By Kenny Johnson 15 May 2011
Friday found us playing a weather meteorologist; needless to say we would not make it as a weather person. 2 tracks, Elkins and Lakeville got to race and we sat at the house. Saturday Mother Nature was cancelling tracks all around and we sat at the garage until the last possible moment. The only track racing in our area was I-77 Speedway in Fairplains, WV. We watched the radar and saw they were getting hit with a pretty hard rain. But they decided to wait it out and sure enough they were racing. We didn’t leave the garage until close to 6:30 and of course we didn’t miss a thing. They had 32 cars and we started 7th in the 2nd heat. We made our way to a 2nd place finish, but after we crossed the checkered and entered turn 1, our lower ball joint sheared and also broke our upper control. We had to get towed in, but we got it put back together to start 6th in the feature. We moved into 3rd pretty quick, then moved into 2nd and battled for the win. We lost some ground at one point, but made the distance back up, but fell short. So we got another 2nd, but the car was really good.
This weekend we intend on doing Skyline on Friday and we have yet to make a decision for Saturday. To keep up to date on our nightly results and up to date schedule, go to Kenny Johnson Motorsports on Facebook and Tim will provide updates as the night goes on.

Update #7 Race #5 & #6 By Kenny Johnson 08 May 2011
I’ll start off by wishing my Mom and all mom’s out there Happy Mothers Day!
With Mother Nature winning out at a lot of the area tracks, one track did get their race in and that was Jackson County Speedway in Jackson, OH. The last time I raced at this track was back in 2001. It had been shut down since 2008 and is now under new management. With Mother Nature making it difficult for track owners to prepare their tracks, this night kind of proved it. It was rough, but it was rough for everyone. They had 18 mods and Coop drew us a #3 pill. But, he learned that it was really #33, because it was already drawn and they put it back in and if it is redrawn they add 30 to it. So this started us 4th in the 3rd heat. We managed to get the win. They do a redraw for the feature and I redrew a 6. We somehow managed to jump into 2nd place pretty quick and then went on to get our 3rd win of the year.
Saturday we intended to go to K-C, but the weather directed us to go to Hilltop, in which we had double features to run. The track was packed hard and was slick from the get go. We started 7th in the rain out feature and stayed around 7th the entire race until about 3 laps to go and we lost 2 more positions and finished a disappointing 9th. I came in and totally changed the set up. Coop drew us a #22 pill to start us 5th in the first heat. We got 2nd and felt like the car had improved but still wasn’t enough. So I went even further with changes in hopes of making it better. Before the 2nd feature I had told Coop I think our original set up was the one we needed and I just needed to make a change to have helped the car that I overlooked. But we stayed with what I had put on it and proved my gut feeling to be correct. We started 5th in the feature and slowly worked our way to a 10th place finish. Tonight’s racing brought us back to reality for sure. It proved to me that we have a good car, but it’s only as good as the changes I choose and I did not make very good decisions tonight.
This weekend . . . . . . Well, I don’t think I am making any announcement for this weekend, maybe we can trick Mother Nature and she’ll cut us a break.

Update #6 Race #3 #4 By Kenny Johnson 02 May 2011
Thursday night I had pretty much accepted that we would be home on Friday night, for all of the area tracks had cancelled. But Coop didn’t give up and he found Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, PA racing. They normally don’t run mods, but just a couple of times a year. They were paying $800 to win and it was a 3 ½ hour tow, so we headed out Friday afternoon. We got there and the temperature was in the 40’s and a mist of rain, with expectations of being in the 30’s by late night. The track had gotten quite a bit of rain on Thursday night and by the time we hot lapped; the track was starting to show signs of a rough racetrack. They had 14 cars show up and they did pill draw. We started 4th in the heat and finished 2nd to Deana Groves. Now they do a redraw there and they redraw the top 12. This redraw started us 6th in the feature and with the rough racetrack; we got stuck on the outside and just could not get through the rough. We fell back to 9th and we finally got to the bottom, in which it was still rough, just not as rough. We started picking them off, sometimes 2 at a time and made our way to the lead and went on to get our 2nd win of the year. That made our 20th different racetrack that we have won on, with another 23 tracks that we have raced on, but have not won, we’ll get them eventually.
So, Coop & I left there and drove to Stuebenville, OH & spent the night, then drove on over to Millersburg to Hilltop Speedway. They had 41 cars and I messed up qualifying and qualified 9th fast. I messed up by overdriving. I knew the car was better than that, but I just took us out of the dash. So we started on the pole of the 3rd heat and won the heat, to start us 9th in the feature. As we were setting in the chute it started to rain and they cancelled and now they have double features scheduled for us next Saturday.
Also making the trip was the Lemon family and Pam brought us some cheese dip and chips. Lemon’s are not only fans of KJ Motorsports, but fans of racing in general and are always ready to go. Chad brought dad up for his first race of the year and unfortunately he didn’t get to see the feature, but his comment was that we have a really fast car and I have to agree.
This weekend we plan to do Skyline on Friday and Saturday we are in a bit of a dilemma. We have double features at Hilltop, each paying $700 to win for a possible $1,400, but we also have K-C racing, paying $1,500 and I love K-C and we have quite a few fans that are expecting us there. We’ll be watching the weather as the week goes on and we’ll make a decision later in the week so keep watching on
Facebook, for Tim will update our decision.

Update #5 Race #2 By Kenny Johnson 25 Apr 2011
Here it is, the last weekend of April coming up and we have only raced 2 times. That’s right, we got to race this weekend thanks to Joe Cox. With the weather cancelling all racing on Friday and looking like it was going to cancel everything within a 4 hour radius of us on Saturday, we decided to head south to County Line Raceway in Elm City, NC. We were talking to Joe Cox, driver of the #41, J&J Fabrication, Brett Hamilton Chassis and he was telling me that he was going crazy not being able to race yet and he was heading south. Coop jokingly said, tell him we’ll be down to put our car in his 2 car trailer and go with him. Joe said, bring it on down. Then we started thinking seriously about it and by 7:30 pm on Friday, we made it official. They had 21 cars and 3 of those were from WV, us, Joe Cox and Deena Groves out of Morgantown. We set fast time with a 16.3, which paid $100 and this put us on the pole of the feature. Down south, they normally do not run heat races, they just have practice sessions. With us qualifying on the pole, I was not complaining. They threw the green and outside pole setter, Eric Erwin, took the lead coming off of turn 2 and as we entered turn 3 I dove in under him and we raced side by side down the front chute. I took in deep into turn 1 and Eric took it in just as deep, but he ran out of real estate and caught the wall. We went on to lead the remaining laps to get our first win of the year ahead of track local racer Ricky Bohan. Joe Cox finished 5th and Deena Groves got taken out in that 2nd lap wreck. Tim and Chad
were a huge help as always and I’d like to thank all of our sponsors.
Also want to thank Joe Cox and his team for hauling us down and providing a fun time. Please take the time to go to www.jandjfabrication.net and check out Joe’s business. If you have a need for anything that’s on his web site, give him a call and tell him I sent ya!
This weekend is dependant of Mother Nature and can change at the drop of the hat. But for now, we plan on doing 250 Speedway on Friday and Muskingum County on Saturday, so we hope to see you there.

Update #4 Race #1 By Kenny Johnson 10 Apr 2011
Well Mother Nature played havoc on our weekend plans. Friday racing was cancelled and our plans changed for Saturday three times because of weather forecasts. We wound up going to Hilltop Speedway in Millersburg, OH, in which we had not raced there since 2008. I’ll first start our road trip story. (We almost always have a road trip story) I have a 2005 Dodge Dually that we are towing with this year. We had the truck full of diesel and headed north on I-77. My windows are tinted so I wasn’t real sure, but I thought I was seeing a faint smoke trailing us, but saw no other signs of an issue and just figured the tint was playing tricks on me. But when we got off exit 65 I saw a trail of liquid streaming behind us. So we stopped at the first gas station and sure enough we were leaking diesel. It cost $101 to fill it up. We fixed the leak, only to have it happen again and again and again. The last time it started leaking at the injector pump. We were far enough along that there was no turning back and the mindset we have is to just make it to the track and we’ll worry about getting home later. . .LOL
So, now on to the racing part of the story. We got to the track late and we did not get to hot lap, nor did we get to draw a pill for qualifying. We qualified last of 37 cars and took our very first lap on the clock. We set 3rd fast time in which I was really pleased with. We started 4th in the dash and finished 2nd. Made some changes for the feature and they were definitely the right changes. Started 2nd and took the lead on lap 1 and stretched it out. There were a few cautions, but on lap 11 under caution, we got a right rear flat tire. We were allowed to change it and we came back out and tacked the tail of the lead lap cars, which was 10th. We had 9 laps to go and we came back to finish 2nd. VERY HAPPY with the performance of the car and anxious to race it again this coming weekend.
Tim Cooper has set up a Kenny Johnson Racing page on Facebook, so check it out.
This weekend we plan to go to 250 Speedway on Friday and K-C Speedway on Saturday, so we hope to see you there.

Update #3 Season Opener to be when Mother Nature says so! By Kenny Johnson 05 Apr 2011
Well, Mother Nature is making a statement in our area and apparently it’s not time to start racing. Tracks have even pushed their opening dates out in hopes that Mother Nature will take a break. So, as of now, we plan to race at Moler Raceway Park (just this side of Cincinnati) in which we have never been there before and it is a UMP track. Then we’ll be stopping at K-C Raceway for an AMRA Road Warrior race.
Again, with the weather, things could change at any moment, so feel free to call me to get an update!

Update #2 Season Opener At Hilltop Speedway By Kenny Johnson 29 Mar 2011
No, not that Hilltop Speedway. The Hilltop Speedway that is in Millersburg, OH. We haven’t raced there in a couple of years, but the times we did, we were competitive. We have our brand new Larry Shaw modified, Outlaw Race Parts, Coughlin cars.com, GP&S ready to go for the 2011 season. We are anxious to get on the track and see if we can better our season from last year.
The schedule is not complete, for not all tracks have their schedules out yet. But I tried to put one together based on some money races within a 2 to 3 hour tow. I’d like us to be
able to step up at some of these money shows. For it will get us better exposure along with getting our sponsors seen more. So keep checking back in on the tour tab and try to schedule some races that you normally wouldn’t go to so that you can root us on.
I want to thank, Tim Cooper, Chad Nelson, Jason Canepari and Todd Lambiotte for their help this winter. These guys get no compensation and just do it for the love of the sport! Thanks a lot! Also need to thank Jake Cooper and K-Graphics for the color scheme this year.
I’m hoping to have a real good newsletter next week, so keep checking in weekly from here on out to see what I might have to update you with.

Update #1 Getting Things Ready For 2011! By Kenny Johnson 02 Feb 2011
Date: 2-2-11 Well up till this past weekend, it’s been kind of a slow off season. Back in December, Tim and I went to Batesville, Arkansas to Larry Shaw Racecars to pick up our new chassis that we won from Skyline Speedway for winning the track points. We did some of our own modifications and Dad and Carl Walker took it over to Hardrock Powder Coating. We picked it up Friday and it was nice and shiny black. We worked on it all weekend and it is starting to take shape. Hopefully in a few weeks it’ll look like a racecar.
With the help of Steve Leist at TNS Photos, we generated a portfolio to help obtain sponsorship for the 2011 season. We sent out many requests and received back many NO’s. But if you don’t ask, you don’t know. But we did get some new sponsors along with keeping some old ones. So to date, here is who will be supporting KJ Motorsports in 2011:
• K-Graphics – Keith Emrick – 304-428-2685
• Outlaw Race Parts – www.outlawraceparts.com – 800-393-9951 - Ask for Doug

I want to thank Dad & Mom, Billy Joe & Wanda Hammett, Bill & Patty Welch (compliments of Phil Welch), Tony & Bubba Branscom for their support throughout the season. Also the guys at the shop, whether they are full time or part time help, their help is always needed and appreciated; Tim Cooper, Chad Nelson, Jason Canepari and Brian Dennewitz.
This year we will have T-Shirts for sale. We have been getting requests for a few years now and thanks to T&L Consulting, we will be selling them. I’ll keep you all updated as to when they are ordered and when they arrive. I will also be working with T&L Consulting with a new idea I had for 2011. We will have a “KJ’s Highside Fan Club” and a “KJ’s Highside Kids Club”. As we get the details worked out I will pass on the info. and will have a tab added on the web page.
Other news in which some were aware of and others may not have been is Kim and I got married on 1-1-11. Ironic that the date some how relates to my racecar number. Which wasn’t intended to work out that way, but it did. I have been blessed with a great wife and great kids.

Update #30 Race #48 By Kenny Johnson 10 Oct
2010
Went to K-C Speedway on Saturday night
for what would be our last race of the season for KJ
Motorsports in the 2 Brothers Shaw modified. There were
54 cars signed in and we group qualified. We were in the
5th group and we set fast time in our group and 6th
fastest time overall. Of course our time might have been
a little better if I would not have tried to knock the
wall down in turn 3. But that’s just the way I roll at
K-C. . . LOL So we started on the pole of the heat along
side Kevin Morehouse, whom has won 25 features this
year. On the initial start we took the lead, but a
yellow would come out and we had a 2nd double file start
and this time Kevin got the lead. He went to the high
side and we pressured the entire race. Prior to taking
the white flag I dove to the bottom of 3 and 4 to try
and sucker him down. When we entered 3 and 4 for the
checkered he dove to the bottom to take my line and it
was set up perfectly. I charged to the high side and our
front bumper was up to his right front wheel at the
line. Darn good race; just came up short. Finishing 2nd
place would start us 11th in the feature. The car was
really good in the feature, we came from 11th to 6th in
10 laps and was working on 5th when he spun out in front
of us in turn 1 and we had no where to go. We wound up
getting a right front flat and the rules for the night
would not allow us to change it. So I had higher
expectations for our last race. But all in all, the
season was a huge success. We won the Skyline Points
Championship, we won the AMRA National Points
Championship and we finished 3rd in the AMRA Road
Warrior Tour Points Championship and 17 feature wins and
24 heat race wins.
First off I want to thank Tim Cooper for all of the
help he has provided all season long. Tim spends a lot
of hours in the garage and all his weekends at the races
with me. He is a big reason for the success we had this
year! Also want to that Chad Nelson and Jason Canepari
for their help and Dad and Mom. I want to thank Jr. and
Tommy Nolan of 2 Brothers Motorsports and Shaw Racecars
for allowing us to race what has been a great racecar.
Sponsors that have helped this year is K-Graphics,
Balderson Construction, T&L Consulting, H&S
Construction, Hammett Trucking and 2 sponsors we have
picked up for the 2011 season is Outlaw Race Parts (www.outlawraceparts.com)
and TNS Photos (www.tnsphoto.net). I want to welcome
them to our team. I also can’t forget all of the
“Highside Fans” that have followed us to numerous
tracks. Many of them has left their home track to come
and watch us race at another track. They all mean a lot
to me and I appreciate all of them. Of course I can’t
leave out Kim, for she doesn’t get to go to all of the
races and there are many evenings thru the week that she
is already in bed when I get in from the garage and she
has yet to complain. We are actively looking for
sponsorship for the 2011 season. If any of you know of
anyone interested in helping our race team, please let
me know and I can set up a meeting with them.
I plan to go to West Virginia Motor Speedway this
weekend in hopes that someone may ask me to drive. If
not, I’ll be spectating. If any other news comes up,
I’ll send out a new update! Thanks to all for a great
season!

Update #29 Race #47 By Kenny Johnson 03 Oct 2010
Well, I think we made one of the best decisions Saturday and for me and the decision we made, it was pretty unusual. We planned to go to K-C Saturday night and we even planned to leave early. But after talking with several “High Side Fans” from Chillicothe, I thought I should just wait it out. So I sat at Coopers all afternoon, watching college football and the Nationwide race and of course the weather radar. It kept getting later and later and it would take us an hour and 40 minutes to get there. But in watching the radar, we knew the rain was going to be hitting there soon. We finally got the call around 5:30 and the rain started. The Valley was paying $1,000 to win and we thought there might be a chance they could beat the rain, so we headed that way. Just as we pulled in, I got the call that K-C cancelled. We missed the pill draw so we had to start 9th in the 3rd heat. We managed to work our way thru the field and we won the heat. On the pill draw, Cooper got us a 3rd place starting position. When they threw the green we got held up a bit and fell to 5th before we got off of turn 2. But in just a few laps we moved into 2nd and were racing Kenny Riddle for the lead. Riddle was running the low side and we were on the top. A caution came out and that brought us to a restart. When Riddle got into turn 1 on the bottom and hit his brakes too hard and killed his engine (which I have done before). So we now inherited the lead and went on to get the win and it was win #17. I was pretty excited, not only for the win, but the fact that we made a really good decision and beat Mother Nature!
We plan to race this car one more time and that will be this Saturday at K-C Speedway for $1,200 to win. So we hope to see you there!

Update #28 Race #46 By Kenny Johnson 26 Sep 2010
Saturday we went to a jammed packed Ohio Valley Speedway. There was no qualifying and Cooper wasn’t there to draw our pill. When I went up to draw, Josh Davis’s (sprint car driver) son (about 1 ½ years old) drew me a #27 to start us 6th in the first heat. We managed to get the win in which we had to do another pill draw for our feature starting position. I made sure Cooper did the pill draw and he has been absolutely awesome on pill draws. We started on the pole of the feature. We took the early lead on the low side and then we moved to the top. The top was kind of a fine line. When I hit it right, it was fast, when I hit it wrong it allowed others to gain on us. I felt like we had a win wrapped up, but the radiator cap came loose and we had to pull off. Just kind of dumb luck and with the year we have had I guess we can’t complain too much.
This Saturday we plan to go to K-C Speedway for a Road Warrior Tour race paying $1,200 to win. So we hope to see you there!
Keep Kim in your thoughts and prayers, for she had surgery this past Friday and will have a few weeks of recovery.

Update #27 Race #44 & #45 By Kenny Johnson 23 Sep 2010
We spent 3 days at Skyline for 2 Road Warrior Tour races. We set 4th fastest time on night one and sat on the pole of the heat race and got the win. This started us 4th in the feature and we moved right into 2nd place. We could not reel in the first place car and we got passed with 3 laps to go to give us a 3rd place finish. In hind sight I blame our tire selection for our finish. Although it is respectable, it wasn’t what we were looking for. For the 2nd show the track wasn’t like any other time at Skyline this year. The track got real abrasive and bolted down black. When I went out to qualify, I was laying down a real good lap until coming off of turn #4, I smacked the wall. We still managed an 8th fastest time to start us outside pole of the 4th heat. We took the lead coming off of turn 2, but by the time we got back to turn 2 again, we were in 4th. There was a single black lane that was fast and if you got out of the black, like I did, you were going backwards, again like I did. I got back down in the black and passed for 3rd and that is where we finished. That started us 12th in the feature and I knew it would be follow the leader and wait for someone to get out of line. One car spun out and we passed 5 others to finish 6th. Not the weekend I was looking for, but car is still good and respectable finishes for the competition we had.
Thanks to the Lemon family for the use of their vehicle all weekend.
This weekend we are at Ohio Valley Speedway on Saturday. So we hope to see you there!

Update #26 Race #43 By Kenny Johnson 12 Sep 2010
No racing on Friday and Skyline had moved to Saturday this weekend. So we went to Skyline for the last and final point’s night. The best I had it figured is all we had to do to clinch the points championship over Doug Henry was to just show up. So unofficially we won the Skyline Speedway Track Championship. So now, for how the night went. Cooper drew us pill #15 which had us lined up starting 3rd in the heat race. But the pole sitter had to scratch and that moved us to the #1 starting spot. Cooper has done amazing job at drawing our pills this year. We went on to win heat race #3 to start us 3rd in the feature. To make a long story shorter, we overtook the lead from Doug Henry in lapped traffic and were hammer down and it looked as though we were going to get the win, with a lap and a half to go, the right rear tire blew! It was very disappointing, for I felt like we would get another win. For those that wasn’t there, consider yourself somewhat lucky, because I didn’t get home until 4:30 a.m. I did have some high side fans from KC there and they stuck it out until the very end! Thanks to them and others that stuck it out.
This weekend is a big weekend for us at the Harvest 50 at Skyline Speedway. We will be racing Friday, Saturday and Sunday. So we hope to see you there!
Other news is we picked up a new sponsor for 2011 and they are Outlaw Race Parts. Please go to www.outlawraceparts.com and if you are a racer check out the low prices and if you are a fan, order some racing apparel and let them know you saw their name on our car. Update #25 Race #40, #41 & #42 By Kenny Johnson 08 Sep 2010
Well, best grab a snack and a drink, for this may be a long one!
Thursday we went to WVMS for a rain out race from back in May. We started 7th and made our way up to 3rd. But we were having an issue with the car smoking for we had sucked a valve cover gasket. You see, our engine is very tired and worn out and is way overdue for a freshen up. Because the rings are so worn it creates a lot of crankcase pressure and that pressure has to go somewhere. I was watching my gauges very close, so close that I missed my marks in turns 3 and 4 and was passed by Chris Stotts on the last lap, so we finished 4th. All in all I was pretty happy with the run.
Friday we went back to WVMS for $2,000 to win. 40 some cars showed up and we set 8th fastest time to start us outside pole of the 4th heat. Because the engine was a little sluggish I decided to put more gear in it. It did bring the car to life and we won the heat race. Started 4th in the feature and moved right into 3rd behind Jr. Nolan and Jared Landers. Jr. dropped out with overheating problems and Jared Landers was sent to the tail for spinning a lap car. This put us in the lead and surprisingly we went on to get win #16 for the year. I never would have thought we’d get a win against the competition that was there and to be honest, if Jr. or Jared would not have had bad luck, we probably would not have won. But we’ll take the win for sure!
After cleaning up the oil mess again on Saturday, we went back to WVMS. We set 10th fastest time and they inverted the top 4 in each heat. This put us right where we wanted to be on the outside pole. We started right beside car owner Jr. Nolan and we took it into turn 1 just a little deeper than he did and that got us the lead and we went on to get the heat win. This started us 3rd in the feature and the inside line was not the ideal place to be. We fell to 6th place before we got to the high side. Once on the high side we started getting the car going good and we passed for 5th and was reeling in 4th, when I had to pull off because the oil pressure was fluctuating from all of the blow by the engine has. I feel we could have gotten a top 5, but we still have races to run this year and I definitely did not want to hurt the engine.
Again had an oil mess to clean up and get things ready for the 100 lapper, $10,000 to win show at Tyler County. They had 60 some cars and was group qualifying. We sure had a tough group of cars with names like Bobby Kitchens, Rick Aukland, Dave McWilliams and Corey Conley. We were 4th fastest in our group, but we were all close. They inverted the top 4 and that put us starting on the pole. Now here is where I made a HUGE mistake. With the track being slick I used our Skyline mentality on tire choice and we went soft on tires. Well, that was totally wrong and it costs us big time, for we wound up finishing 5th in the heat race. Very big mistake! We started 7th in the consi and finished 5th. They were only taking the top 3, but we knew all along that we had a provisional for the high AMRA point man. So we got in the show started 23rd and at one point were in 7th. But we had changed 2 tires at different times along the way and wound up finishing 10th. All in all a respectable run and I was very pleased with the car and set up once we got the right tires on it. Along with the help of Cooper, I want to thank Louie Krushansky’s and Mike McPherson’s crew for their help during the feature. Coop could not have done it by himself.
All in all a pretty decent weekend, although it feels like it took a year or so off my life, for it was a very tiring weekend. This weekend Skyline is running on Saturday and this will be the last point s race and if all goes well, I think we will win the points championship at Skyline.
Skyline will be our only race this weekend. So we hope to see you there!

Update #24 Race #38 & #39 By Kenny Johnson 30 Aug 2010
Friday we went to Skyline where they had 30 modifieds. Tim Cooper drew the #1 pill to start us on the pole of the first heat in which we won. Started on the pole of the feature and took the lead and never looked back to get win #14. Car felt really good and it made for a great night.
Saturday we went to the Valley to finally get in the Topless race and also the Faster Pastor race. Mark Houser (my pastor) drove Steve Brown’s car and started front row outside. Mark is the type to hold back and let others receive all the glory. So he finished 6th. That’s my reason he finished 6th, of course his daughter not letting him off the hook that easy. For she said she could have out ran him on foot. . . LOL But it was a fun night for all involved.
For the topless race, they had 37 modifieds and we were 2nd fast time. Started on the pole of the heat and won it. Cooper drew us another great pill to start us on the pole of the feature. We took the lead and we had gotten pressure from Phil Jeffries, Ricky Venham & Jimmy Fordyce but were able to hold each of them off and get win #15 for the year. It was a really good night with church members being there to see our win and also some High Side Fans from Chillicothe, OH (The Caplinger Family and the Branscom’s) made the trip down rather than going to K-C Speedway.
Having the fan support that we do, really means a lot. Just like the sponsors we have. . . I want to thank Jr. and Tommy Nolan of 2 Brothers Motorsports, Shaw Racecars, K-Graphics, Balderson Construction, Billy Lloyd Racing Engines, H&S Construction, T&L Consulting, Bill & Patty Welch, Billy Joe and Wanda Hammett, Wayne Cornell of WOC Designs, TNS Photos, Carl and Sharon Walker and of course Mom and Dad. It would be near impossible to race without the support of these people. Also need to thank Tim Cooper, Chad Nelson and Jason Canepari for the many hours they put in at the track and at the garage.
This is a huge racing weekend coming up. We will be at Mineral Wells for a make up race on Thursday where we start 7th. Then we are there Friday and Saturday for 2 complete shows paying $2,000 to win each. Sunday we go to Tyler County Speedway for 100 lap race paying $10,000 to win. If our wining streak or even just our running good streak can continue it will be a great weekend. So we hope to see you there!

Update #23 Race #37 By Kenny Johnson 22 Aug 2010
Friday, Skyline was back in action and we had 37 modifieds. Cooper is still doing great at drawing pills and drew a #9 which started us 2nd in the 3rd heat. We won the heat to start us 3rd in the feature. We took 2nd on the first lap and were pressuring the leader, when on the 2nd lap we got a right rear flat tire. That pretty much ruined a potentially good night. We got a DNF with an 18th place finish. The Caplinger family made their way down to watch us on a night that saw our feature hit the track near 1:00 am and then to see us run only 2 laps was disappointing I’m sure.
Saturday we went to K-C Speedway to get rained out just as we were turning into the track. WOW, Mother Nature sure does like messing with us.
This weekend we will be at Skyline on Friday and Ohio Valley Speedway on Saturday for the Topless Race and the Faster Pastor Race. So we hope to see you there!

Update #22 Race #36 By Kenny Johnson 16 Aug 2010
Friday we went to Beckley for a Road Warrior Tour race paying $1,000 to win. Unfortunately they only had 14 cars, but they were 14 strong cars. We set fast time with a 14.94 and started on the pole of the heat beside Brett Hamilton. Brett and I ran door to door for one entire lap before I hit the brakes too hard and killed the engine entering turn 1. When the engine quit, it immediately turned me sideways and I spun out. Total mistake on my part and it costs us as you’ll see. We went to the tail and were able to make it back to 4th. This started us 7th in the feature, but on the 1st lap 2 cars almost spun in front of me, but we all saved it and kept going. The only problem was that we were now last and had to fight our way back with no cautions. We only made it back to 7th. I was disappointed in our finish and disappointed that I cost us a good run by spinning out in the heat race. I guess we haven’t had too many nights like this one, so I should consider ourselves fortunate. But I don’t, it still bugs me!
Saturday we went to the Valley for the Topless race paying $1,200 to win and also the Faster Pastor race, in which my Pastor from Lubeck Community Baptist Church was participating. But Mother Nature thought better of us getting to race. All we got to do is hot lap and get our cars muddy. They have rescheduled this race for Aug. 28th. Also want to say thanks for some High side Fans from KC coming down to watch, the Caplinger families and Bubba Branscom and his brothers. Hope they can make it back down on the 28th!
This weekend we will be at Skyline on Friday and KC on Saturday. So we hope to see you there!
Also want to give a shout out to Wayne Cornell “WOC Designs” for maintaining and keeping our web site up to date! For those that read the updates, drop a note on our guestbook.

Update #21 Race #34 & #35 By Kenny Johnson 09
Aug 2010
Friday we went to Beckley for $1,000
to win. They had 18 cars and we set fast time and a new
track record of 14.65. We started on the pole of the
heat race and won the heat to start us on the pole of
the feature. We managed to beat Todd Robinson into the
1st turn and led every lap to pick up the $1,000 and our
13th feature win. It was a good night.
Saturday we headed over to Brushcreek where they had
51 cars. We had an issue while qualifying in that our
radiator cap came off and we lost most of our water. So
I did not get a completed lap. We were 7th quick in our
group. We finished 6th in our heat to start us 4th in
the consi. They were only taking the top 4 to the
feature. We fell back to 5th and I put it to the high
side and of course slammed the wall bending up our
decking and stuff, but we made it back to 4th and made
the show. Started 24th in the feature and made our way
to 14th until having to pull out with a DNF due to the
engine overheating. Happy to make the feature, but sure
would have liked to start the night off better. I want
to thank Tom and Pam Lemon and their sons for all of the
help and this weekend we’ll see T&L Consulting on the
side of the car. I also want to give a shout out to TNS
Photos out of Chillicothe. Check them out at
www.tnsphoto.net
This weekend we go back to Beckley for a Road Warrior
Tour race and then back to Ohio Valley for the Topless
Race paying $1,200 to win. So we hope to see you there!

Update #20 Race #33 By Kenny Johnson 01 Aug 2010
Friday we were at Skyline and they had 25 cars. Coop drew pill #4 to start us on the pole of the 1st heat along side Doug Henry. We managed to get the heat win to start us on the pole of the feature. We took the lead and were able to stretch the lead out and get our 12th win of the year.
Saturday we were all set for the topless race at Ohio Valley Speedway. But some rain showed up and they decided to cancel. We hopped in the truck and made a bee line for K-C Speedway. We made it there in time and were able to get the roof on the car, change gears and change the set up. All in time for the rain to start there and for us to get rained out yet again!
This weekend you’ll find us at Beckley Speedway on Friday for $1,000 to win and then on to Brushcreek Speedway in Peebles, OH on Saturday for $10,000 to
win or a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle. I’m pretty anxious to race at Brushcreek! So we hope to see you there!

Update #19 Race #31 & #32 By Kenny Johnson 25 Jul 2010
Friday we went to Skyline and they had 21 cars. Coop is on temporary suspension from drawing pills, so I hired Coleman Evans (Robbie Evans youngest) to draw my pill. Well, even he got fired for drawing us #32. This started us 5th in the 1st heat and we got the win to start us on the pole of the feature along side Andy Bond who was subbing for Doug Henry. As we entered turn one I pushed up some and Jeremy Blake immediately got by me off of turn 2. We ran 3rd the entire race and that is where we finished. The car lacked drive off of the corners. But a decent points night for track points and AMRA.
Saturday we went to KC for fan appreciation night and for double features. They had 29 cars and we set 2nd fast time. Started on the pole of the heat and won it to start us on the outside pole of the feature beside Rob Stambaugh. We managed to take the lead and get the win. The rules for the 2nd feature were that all lead lap cars were inverted for the start of the 2nd feature. We started 11th and in 5 laps were running 4th, the car was awesome. On lap 6 I got impatient and made a move that potentially costs us another win. I made it 3 wide for the lead going down the back chute. 1st and 2nd was on the track and I, of course, was off the track. We may have had a nose ahead of them, but when it came time to get into turn 3 and I needed to be back on the track, the other 2 cars would have nothing of it and I ended up way down off the track near general admission. Fortunately I never hit anything and we were able to tack the tail. We had 14 laps to work my way back up to the front. It went green the rest of the way and we made it to a 4th place finish. If we could have won both features, they were paying a $500 bonus. Essentially I blew $1,100 by not being patient. It may have put on a show for the fans. . . but it sure costs our team some money. . . The “High Side Fans” were on their feet for both features and I want to thank all of them for their support!
Thanks to Jr. and Tommy Nolan of 2 Brothers Motorsports, Kevin Shaw of Shaw Racecars, Keith Emrick of K Graphics, Billy Lloyd of Billy Lloyd Racing Engines, Steve Balderson of Balderson Construction, Joe Schilling of H&S Construction, Tom and Pam Lemon of TLConsulting, Tim Cooper, Chad Nelson, Jason Canepari and Dad. Of course Kim for all the support and allowing me to spend the time that’s needed in the garage. We also met a race fan recently at Skyline, Phil Welch and he has asked to have his mom and dad’s name to be on the car. Bill and Patty Welch. Thanks for the support!
This weekend we are keeping it close to home. Friday we will be back to Skyline and Saturday heading down to Ohio Valley for $1,200 to win topless race. So we hope to see you there!

Update #18 Race #29 & #30 By Kenny Johnson 20 Jul 2010
Friday we headed to Elkins for a Road Warrior Tour race. We made it to the racetrack to only have it start sprinkling. We were there for maybe 10 minutes and they cancelled the race. So we made a MAD DASH for Skyline. I don’t want to go into details, let’s just say I had Cooper a nervous wreck at one point. LOL But we did make it in time to tack the tail of the 3rd heat race. We started 7th and finished 4th, this started us 12th in the feature. We made it as far as 3rd and were pressuring 2nd. But a caution came out and Jeremy Blake got back by us, so we finished 4th.
Saturday we went to Tyler County for another Road Warrior Tour race. They had 21 cars and we were 9th fastest. I was not pleased with my qualifying run and felt like it was more me than the car. We started 3rd in the heat race and finished 3rd. Again, not pleased with the performance. We started 9th in the feature and finished a disappointing 11th. This is the worst I had felt in the car all year long. Not sure if I have something wrong or was just not able to get it dialed in. But this week we’ll have to go over it and see if we find anything.
This weekend we will be at Skyline on Friday and to K-C on Saturday. K-C is fan appreciation night and will also be double features. We start the 2nd feature inverted from how we finished the first feature. It should make for some interesting racing. So we hope to see you there!

Update #17 Race #27 & #28 By Kenny Johnson 11 Jul 2010
Thursday night around 11:10 pm Carl McPherson (Mikey McPherson’s – RV1 – Dad) passed away. Friday even though the weather did not look like it was going to cooperate, Skyline was bound and determined to get it in. Mikey decided to race to honor his dad.
Now for our night, Cooper finally drew a bad pill and we started 6 in the heat race. We managed to come up to finish 2nd to start us 3rd in the feature. Mikey started 4th beside us. Mikey took the early lead and looked to be really fast. I finally managed to get to the high side and was able to take the lead and we went on to get the win, but not without getting some late race pressure from Mikey. The win was bitter/sweet for me, for I would have loved to see Mikey win on this night in particular, but I did not give it to him. I also don’t believe he would have wanted to win that way either. We got win #10 for the season.
Saturday we went to KC and again Cooper’s pill draw skills have diminished. We started 6th in the heat again and had a strange run in the heat. We were as far back as 6th and as high up as 3rd. We just could not get an open race track. Needless to say on the last lap the last turn we got a right rear flat and wound up finishing 5th, which forced us to run the consi. We managed to win the consi and started 17th in the feature. We came up to 10th after passing Jason Montgomery. But a yellow flag put Jason back in front of us and he took the high line that we had been running. Needless to say we had worse finish for the year, 11th place. I did knock the back deck and quarter panels off which does happen at KC.
I want to wish race fan Pam Lemon a Happy Birthday on Saturday July, 10th.
This weekend we will be going to Road Warrior Tour racing at Elkins on Friday and Tyler County on Saturday. So we hope to see you there!

Update #16 Race #24, #25 & #26 By Kenny Johnson 05 Jul 2010
Start off with a prayer request, Kim’s dad, Jim Blair had a heart attack and stroke Friday evening. He seems to progressing well at this time, but has a ways to go until full recovery.
Thursday we went to Beckley for a $1,000 to win show and 22 cars made the trip. When I went out to hot lap, the car was not all that good, so we made some changes. We started 6th in the heat and made it up to finish 3rd. This started us 7th in the feature. By lap 5 we moved into 2nd and were racing Brett Hamilton for the lead. We had a good race going until we made contact down the front chute and I got a right front flat. The crew got the tire changed and we went to the tail with 15 laps to go. We made our way back to 6th with the 4th and 5th place car running side by side banging off of one another. I tried a move on the last lap, but it got me spun out. So we got a DNF. We had a good car and should be in good shape for when we have to go back down to Beckley.
Friday we went to Skyline and they had 17 cars. Jess drew our pill and did us no favors, for we started 6th in the heat. But we did get the heat race win to start us on the pole. The track got slick and I figured we’d be in great shape. But as it turned out we finished a 4th. That was our worst finish at Skyline this year.
Saturday we stayed close to home and went to Ohio Valley Speedway. They had 15 cars and we started 5th in our heat race. We wound up crossing the line 1st when the checkered flew, but I guess they felt I jump started the race and they penalized me one position. The top 2 in each heat redraw for their starting spot in the feature and Coop got us the pole position. We went on to lead every lap and pick up win #9 for the year.
This weekend we will be at Skyline on Friday and heading back over to K-C on Saturday. So we hope to see you there!
I’d like to thank Jr. and Tommy Nolan of 2 Brothers Motorsports and Larry Shaw Racecars for providing a real nice racecar. Billy Lloyd Racing Engines for providing great power. Thanks to everyone who helps and for making this season so far a great one!

Update #15 Race #22 & #23 By Kenny Johnson 27 Jun 2010
June 25th finally arrived and we headed to Skyline for the 2nd Annual Greg Schilling Memorial Race. 60 cars showed and several were had more than a 3 hour tow. We set 3rd fast time in our heat, started 3rd and got the win over Vince Conrad. This put us in a dash and Kim drew us a #2 starting spot along side Dave McWilliams. We wound up finishing 3rd in the dash to start us 3rd in the feature. We made a few changes for the feature and they were kind of wrong. I stayed committed to the bottom until a caution came out. We were running 5th and there was only about 5 laps to go, so I decided to move up and I’m glad we did, for we passed our way to a 3rd place finish! Great run for us with some great competition. We also raised some good money for the Greg Schilling Memorial Fund. I want to thank, friends, family, church family & co-workers for coming to this special race.
Saturday, we headed to K-C again, which they had 35 cars. We started 4th in the heat right behind Sean Schobelock. Sean took the early lead and was able to hold onto the lead and get the win, we got 2nd. We started 5th in the feature & passed our way into 2nd, behind Jason Montgomery. I tried several things to make a pass and in the end it cost me a position. We finished 3rd again. Two solid runs for us!
This weekend, we plan on going to Beckley for a Thursday night show paying $1,000 to win, then to Skyline on Friday and back to Ohio Valley on Saturday. I hope everyone has a good 4th of July and hope to see you at the races.
Couple of things to note, Monday the 28th is my sister’s birthday and on Friday, July 2nd, Kim’s son Shawn will be in on leave from the Air Force for a few weeks.

Update #14 Race #20 & #21 By Kenny Johnson 21 Jun 2010
Friday was another night at Skyline and they had 32 cars on hand. We started 4th in the first heat and wound up finishing 2nd to Matt Holcomb. This started us 5th in the feature. About 3 or 4 laps into it we moved into 2nd behind race leader Doug Henry. Doug had the bottom protected, but we did manage to pass him once and the yellow came out, so we had to go back. There was one other time we were in position to make a pass and the yellow came out again. So we had to settle for 2nd. A good run for us going into this week’s Greg Schilling Memorial Race. I hope all fans came make it to this race! This may not be the biggest paying race, but it is probably the most special race I will attend each year.
Saturday we headed on over to K-C. There was only one problem, we didn’t make it there. The old Dodge laid down on us and we were on the phone trying to find a ride! Just as we got the truck unhooked from the trailer, Alice Keefer in the AMRA van drove by at the right time. We were able to hook up and were able to get to the racetrack. Of course, that was our #1 concern; we’d worry about getting home later. LOL We started 5th in our heat race and finished 2nd to track points leader Brian Whiteman. This started us 3rd in the feature. Brian Whiteman and Sean Schobelock started on the front row, with Brian taking the early lead. We worked the low side and made the pass for the lead on lap 3. I then went to the high side for a few laps and learned that the bottom was faster. So we went back to the bottom and got win #8 for the season. In victory lane I apologized to all of the “High Side Fans” for not running my normal wall scraping line, but the win was great! All of the fans at K-C are great and I love racing there. A fan I haven’t seen in a while came to the pits afterwards to say hi. Bruce Caplinger, whom I met him and his family a few years ago over there. The last I spoke to him (last year) he informed me his father was ill. I had not gotten any contact info. from him and looked for him the rest of the season so that I could send a get well card or something. Well, Bruce informed me that his father had passed. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to make contact to thank him for being a fan! It’s good to meet and know our fans. As a racer, we do it because we like it and we want to win. But when the fans let you know that appreciate watching you, we start racing for the fans as well! Thanks to all of you!
I want to thank Brian Wolfe for towing us home. He went out of his way to get the car and trailer home and wouldn’t take a thing for it! Thanks a lot!
I also want to thank Jr. & Tommy Nolan of 2 Brothers Motorsports, Larry Shaw Racecars, Keith Emrick of K-Graphics, Joe Schilling of H&S Construction, Steve Balderson of Balderson Construction, Tim Cooper, Chad Nelson, Jason Canepari, Dad, Tom and Pam Lemon & Family, Billy Joe & Wanda Hammett, Kellie, Jess and last but definitely not least, Kim! Without each one of them and many others, my racing would not be what it is. THANK YOU!

Update #13 Race #19 By Kenny Johnson 14 Jun 2010
Friday we went back to Skyline and they had 23 cars and Tim Cooper continues to draw us a good pill to start us on the outside pole of the 2nd heat along side Jeremy Berwanger. We went on to win the heat race and started outside pole of the feature. The track was much faster than usual and we ran the higher line most of the night. We held off Jeremy Berwanger for a one lap shoot out for win #7 of the year.
Saturday, Mother Nature won out! Probably a good thing, cause the carrier bearing came out of my truck and was unable to fix it on Saturday.
This weekend, again, we plan to go to Skyline and K-C providing Mother Nature cuts us a break. So we hope to see you there!

Update #12 Race #17 & #18 By Kenny Johnson 06 Jun 2010
I need to thank several people for helping us get on the track this weekend. Billy Lloyd jumped in and gave us a quick turnaround so that we could get our engine in time to race this weekend. Keith Emrick of K-Graphics got us some decals so our right side looks a little better than it has. Also need to thank Tim Cooper and Jason Canepari for all of their countless hours of help and dedication to our race team.
Friday we went to Skyline and they had 21 cars. Coop drew us a #12 to start us 3rd in the 1st heat. We got the win in the heat race and this started us on the pole of the feature along side Larry Bond sub’ing for Jeremy Berwanger. We took the early lead and never looked back and picked up the win. Although I was told by many, that if there was one more lap Booger Garnes would have passed us. . . . There have been many of nights I needed one more lap, but regardless when the checkered falls the race is over. This was win #5 on the year.
Saturday Mother Nature was winning everything, but I-77 in Fairplains had blue skies and 88 degrees. So we headed out in the rain and sure enough drove to blue skies. They had 21 cars and we set fast time with a 14.22. We were in the chute for our heat race and the rain came. It was about a 10 minute shower, then cleared up and was nice again. It took a couple of hours to get the track ran in and we went back and ran our heat race. We took the lead in our heat and won it. Started on the pole of the feature beside Ricky Venham and went on to lead every lap and win it. I was very happy with the car and engine, everything was working really well!
I also want to thank 2 Brothers Motorsports and Shaw Chassis for a really good car!
This weekend we will be going to Skyline and K-C Speedway, providing Mother Nature
doesn’t over rule our decision. So we hope to see you there!

Update #11 Race #14, #15 & #16 By Kenny Johnson 31 May 2010
We went to Skyline for double features. In the make up feature we started 2nd along side Booger Garnes. We took the early lead and drove away for the feature win. For the regular show, Kim drew us a #23 to start us 5th in the 2nd heat. We were able to get the heat win to start us again on the outside pole along side Booger Garnes. This feature, the track was slicker, but we drove away for the win yet again to make it #4 for the year.
Saturday we went to Tyler for another make up feature. This one we started 7th but it wasn’t long we took over 2nd and was chasing down the leader, until we had engine problems. This was an engine we had just put in to give the other engine a break. But it was detrimental and we were unable to continue the rest of the night. On the way home Coop and I discussed back and forth as to what we were going to do for the next night. Such as put the other engine in? Take the night off from Sunday’s race? (I really didn’t want that to happen). But Jason Canepari offered up his car for us to go to WVMS to race the Dickson Classic.
Sunday we got Jason’s car ready and headed out to WVMS. They had 32 cars and we qualified 11th fastest. Pretty pleased with that and started 3rd in our heat race. We moved into 2nd pretty quick and it wasn’t until the last 50 feet that we wound up finishing 3rd. Started 11th in the feature and ran around 10th the first 23 laps until I jumped the cushion and got a right rear flat. All in all we learned some things with Jason’s car and our tire selection. I really want to thank Jason for giving me an opportunity to drive his car.
If everything works out, we should be at Skyline on Friday and K-C on Saturday. We hope to see you there.

Update #10 Race #12 & #13 By Kenny Johnson 23 May 2010
I want to start off by saying, Dad spent Wednesday thru Monday in the hospital. He had some bleeding ulcers that caused him to lose some blood and made him very weak. They stopped the bleeding and gave him some blood and is on the road to recovery.
Thursday we headed off to Elkins for another opportunity to race against Kenny Wallace. Kenny and I started on the tail of the heat (7th and 8th) and I finished 5th and he finished 6th. I was not very pleased with the car, for it was not fast at all. So we changed springs, shocks, wedge, engine location and we even threw the kitchen sink at it. We started 9th in the feature and passed our way to 3rd. I was please with the progress and now we have a baseline to take back in July for a Road Warrior Tour race. Kenny Wallace wound up finishing 4th. Tom Lemon made his first visit to Elkins with Tim and I and we put him right to work. I figure next time Tom will know to take a vacation day when we race on a week night. . . LOL
Friday’s racing was rained out and Saturday’s entire racing was called off except K-C Speedway. They had 40 cars and we started 6th in our heat race. The track was a little rough from the heavy rains they got the night before. So I went to the high side above the rough and took the lead and went on to win the heat race. This started us on the pole of the feature along side of Adam Jordan. Adam took the early lead and again I was forced to the high side to take the lead back then I moved to the low side where it was a little smoother. We managed to take the win and the $600 pay day. We met up with some new fans Bob Morris and company and visited some old fans, Tony “Sucker Man” and crew. K-C has some great race fans and aren’t bashful about letting me know they like watching me race. Sure makes me want to go back! Thanks to all of you!
Well, if Mother Nature cuts us some slack this weekend, we will be doing double features at Skyline on Friday and again double features at Tyler County on Saturday and then on to West Virginia Motor Speedway on Sunday for the Dickson Classic. So if you can make it all 3 nights you can see 5 features. I hope we can keep it maintained all weekend. So we hope to see you there!

Update #9 Race #:9, #10 & #11 By Kenny Johnson 17 May 2010
We were supposed to go to Beckley for a RWT race, but they were forced to cancel their season opener due to the weather. So we went to Skyline and watch the storms pass by all around us, but we got no rain at the track. Tim drew us another good pill to start us on the outside pole of the 1st heat. Jeremy Blake took the lead in the heat a whooped us by a straight a way. The track was extremely slick and the car didn’t go as well as I would have liked it to. So we made some set up changes to it and started 4th in the feature. We moved into 3rd early and battled Doug Henry for 2nd for several laps. Was able to pass him and started seeing myself closing in on Jeremy Blake, but not near enough to pressure him, so we got 2nd place. I was happier with the car after the changes, but still need to find a little more. You can catch the feature race on YouTube and type in Kenny Johnson 5-14-10 and it will take you right to it.
Saturday we went to I-77 Speedway to the 2nd RWT race of the year. They had 28 cars and we managed to set fast time with a 14.50. This started us on the pole of the first heat along side Booger Garnes. We took the lead on lap one and never looked back. Started on the pole of the feature beside Jeremy Berwanger and Rod Sayre was behind us. We again took the early lead and were running the high side where it was a little smoother, but the entire track seemed to be getting rougher and rougher and our car did not manage it very well. Rod passed me with like 7 or 8 to go and we tried different lines to make a pass, but could not make it happen. Rod took home the $2,000 and we had to settle for 2nd place money of $550. That made the loss hurt even worse. . . LOL
Sunday we headed out to WV Motor Speedway for the Mark Balzano Memorial race. They had around 20 modifieds and I screwed up and drew my own pill instead of having Kim or Tim draw it. I drew #52 and this started us 6th in the 1st heat. We managed to work our way in to 3rd and was pressuring 2nd place Kenny Riddle. But when a caution came out, WVMS rules for restarts are double file. This put us starting 2nd row inside and Riddle lugged it down to a crawl on the start and we bogged and that allowed Chris Stotts to pass us back again so we finished 4th. This starts us 7th in the feature, but we got rained out. I am not aware of the make up dates as of yet, but will let you know in a later news update!
I want to thank everyone for all of their help and give a call out to Wayne Cornell whom maintains the web site. I have been getting lots of comments and also a lot of people using it to check the latest news and what our schedule is.
This week we plan to go to Elkins on Thursday, Skyline on Friday, this will also be a make up feature too and Tyler County on Saturday for a Road Warrior Tour race. So we hope to see you there!

Update #8 Race #7 & #8 By Kenny Johnson 10 May 2010
Friday we went to Skyline Speedway and Tim Cooper drew us a #4 pill to start us on the pole of heat #2 along side Ricky Venham. We got the heat race win and this started us on the outside pole of the feature, with Booger Garnes on the pole, Doug Henry starting 3rd and Jimmy Fordyce starting 4th. We wrestled Booger for the #1 spot for a lap and half and we managed to take the lead. We lead for the 5 or 6 laps that we got in until the 2nd rain came and this time they had to cancel. So we have yet another double feature to run at skyline in 2 weeks, on May 21st. So mark your calendars and you will get to see us run 2 features for the price of one.
Saturday we were suppose to go to Tyler for our make up feature, but weather conditions forced them to cancel. So we took off and went to K-C Speedway. They had 34 cars and Tim Cooper again drew us a good pill, #8. We started on the outside pole of the 4th heat and got the heat race win to start us 4th in the feature. I messed up on the start and dove to the bottom of turn 3 only to have me sitting in 4th place. I passed for 3rd and worked Jason Montgomery for 2nd until about 4 to go when I was able to get by him for 2nd place. With only 4 laps left it wasn’t enough to give Doug Adkins a run for the money. 2nd place isn’t bad, but wins sure would be better.
We are supposed to go to WVMS for open practice on Tuesday night, but the weather forecast doesn’t look to good right now. So we’ll have to wait and see. Friday we will be going to Beckley for a RWT race and then to I-77 for another RWT race on Saturday. Then Sunday we will be at WVMS for their opening day. So a big 3 day weekend if Mother Nature cooperates with us. Hope to see you there!

Update #7 Race #5 & #6 By: Kenny Johnson 03 May 2010
First off I want to wish my Mom and Dad a Happy 44th Wedding Anniversary, which was last Friday. Dad always said they married for better or for worse. His words are, she couldn’t have done any better and he couldn’t have done any worse. . . LOL I’m certain mom would disagree. Love you both!
Friday we went to K-C for $1,000 to win. They had 36 modifieds and we set 2nd fast time overall and in our group as well. They inverted the top 4 in each heat, which started us 3rd. Based on the last time we were there I thought more gear would help us in the slick, so I put more gear in it and I was WRONG! The car was gear bound and I finished 4th. This started us 13th in the feature. At the start of the feature our car started smoking, I knew what it was, and it was a valve cover gasket. I ignored the smoke and continued to race. Car was really, really good! We made it to 3rd and were pressuring Bobby Kitchen for 2nd, when my oil pressure started fluctuating with 5 laps to go. I made the judgment call to shut it down and pull to the infield. This cost us a great finish and maybe even a win. But if I had stayed out for 5 more laps, I may have lost an engine, which costs way more than the $1,000 to win.
The car was a total mess with all of the oil under it. I went to Sean Schobelock’s garage to get it washed and cleaned up. We finished up around 2:30 am or so.
Saturday got up and started it after changing the oil and the oil pressure was fine. So we went to Roosters in Chillicothe to eat with some friends and then headed home because K-C cancelled due to rain.
Saturday night we wound up going to Tyler, because it looked the best weather wise. I dumbed up and drew my pill which started us last in our heat race. I started 8th and made it up to a 4th place finish. This starts us 7th in the feature which got rained out, so we will have double features next Saturday.
I’d also like to thank all the fans that we have acquired while racing at K-C and it is one of my favorite tracks to race at and we get a lot of good feedback from the fans. THANKS!
This weekend we will be going to Skyline on Friday and will have to go back to Tyler for double features on Saturday. Hope to see you there!

Update #6 Race #4 By Kenny Johnson 25 Apr 2010
Friday night we went to skyline for their season opener. They had 26 cars and Kim drew me pill #3. This started me on the pole of the 3rd heat. We went on to win the heat race, so we started 3rd in the feature. Booger Garnes started on the pole, Ricky Venham on the outside pole. Ricky took the early lead and I raced Booger for 2nd for several laps. I finally made it past Booger and had to chase down Ricky. I caught Ricky and with 2 laps to go we were side by side. After we took the white flag I passed him going down the back chute. I entered turn 3 and 4 on the bottom and as I came off of 4 I was still ahead of Ricky. But as I went down the front chute I was in the gas a little too hard and spun my tires and this allowed Ricky to pull up beside me just as we crossed the checkered flag. Ricky beat me by just a bumper. It made for a good race for the fans, but 2nd isn’t the position I wanted, but it is better than 3rd. Congrats to Ricky and team, for he drives a Canepari Chassis, built by Jason Canepari who also works out of our shop.
All of Saturday’s racing got rained out. So next weekend we plan to go to K-C Speedway on Friday and Saturday. They are paying $1,000 to win on Friday and $2,000 to win on Saturday. We hope to see you there!
On a sad note, Keith Emrick of K-Graphics mother-in-law passed away Thursday night. Please keep Keith and Connie in your prayers.

Update #5 Race #3 By: Kenny Johnson 18 Apr 2010
Friday nights racing was cancelled due to Mother Nature. So we headed to the Valley for their season opener. Unfortunately their car count was low. They only had 5 modifieds. Now besides myself, 3 of the 4 other drivers were past champions and feature winners at Ohio Valley. With the low car count, we decided to skip a heat race and just line up and run a feature. We started 3rd in the feature and took the lead a couple of laps into it. A positive was the car was working extremely well. Prior to the race, Billy Joe and Wanda Hammett had donated $100 to both the late model and modified feature. So by winning, we got an extra $100 to our feature win.
I’d like to thank 2 Brother’s Motorsports, K-Graphics, H&S Construction, Larry Shaw Race Cars, and Balderson Construction for all of their support.
Next week we plan to go to Skyline on Friday and Eastside Speedway in Virginia for a Road Warrior Tour Race. We hope to see you there!

Update #4 Race #2 By Kenny Johnson 11 Apr 2010
Saturday we went to K-C for the first AMRA Road Warrior Tour race. They had 52 cars and they did group qualifying. We set fast time in our group and we also set 4th fastest time out of the 52. We sat on the pole of the 3rd heat race and took the lead going into turn 1. But I allowed the car to get a throttle push and it pushed all the way turn 2 which let 3 cars pass me by. I battled my way back to 3rd and was working on 1st and 2nd until I got a right front flat. This forced me to start 13th in the B-main and they were only taking 2. I managed to get 2nd, which transferred us into the 20th and last starting spot. The first half of the race I somewhat laid back, not pushing the car for I did not want to overheat my tires. But the last half I opened it up and we fought our way to a 4th place finish.
I acquired some new fans from the Chillicothe area for the run we had. But I also acquired an enemy or two as well. In the consi I was bound and determined to get to a top 2 finish to put us in the feature. I ran high and low passing whenever I could. But this one instance I slid up in front of JP Roberts and like me, he was racing hard as well and I caused him to ramp over my right rear and then he hit the wall tearing his car up. I did not intentionally mean to tear anyone up. I can’t make an excuse for it, but an apology doesn’t fix someone’s car. When I race hard like I do, 9 times out of 10 the car I tear up is my own, but this time it was someone else’s. We’ll see what next week brings.
Next week will be the opening nights for Skyline on Friday and Ohio Valley on Saturday and we plan to be at both. We hope to see you there!

Update #3 Race #: 1 By Kenny Johnson 04 Apr 2010
Date: 4-4-10
We went to Tyler County Speedway for their season opener. They had 17 mods and I drew a #14 to start us on the outside pole of the 2nd heat. When they threw the green I stood on the gas and spun my tires and got a horrible start. A yellow occurred and it was a complete restart. So this time I gradually applied the gas pedal and seemed to maintain with the pole setter. But the pole setter was crowding me up the track and we rubbed on one another up the front chute, but it caused me to spin sideway in front of the field. Unfortunately we gave Mike McPherson no where to go. He was able to finish the race, but we broke and upper control arm. Fixed what we could and started 17th in the feature. Worked our way up to 7th place and I thought the car was coming on good, until we got a right rear flat. We got a DNF and were paid for 12th. Not the way to start the year, but we’ll be back out again next weekend.
Next Saturday we’ll be heading to K-C Speedway for the first Road Warrior Tour race. Hope to see you there.

Update #2 First Race This Saturday By Kenny Johnson 29 Mar 2010
Date: 3-29-10
Well it is coming down to the wire to have everything ready for this weekend. We got a 2008, 28’ enclosed trailer. It is a little smaller but a lot lighter and Cooper has got it pretty close and ready for the season. The car is basically done except for decals, which should be done by the end of the week.
Our first race will be at Tyler County on Saturday, since Skyline has postponed there opener until April 16th. I have updated the schedule page.
I’m getting really anxious for the start of the season and looking forward to a successful season. So be watching next Monday for the update on how we do. Hopefully I won’t fire myself right off the bat. . . .LOL

Update #1 3 Weeks Until 1st Race By Kenny Johnson 12 Mar 2010
First off, I want to apologize for not keeping my web site up to date the last half of the 2009 season. With all of the transitioning that was taking place, I just wasn’t up for updating it all. But to recap, I finished racing for Hassy Chassis in June and Louie Krushansky and his team volunteered his back up car so that we would keep racing. I believe I drove it 5 times and had mostly top 5 runs in it. In the meantime a deal was being worked out with my arch enemy, Jr. Nolan. It was a deal that would allow us to race a new Shaw Chassis. So the last half of the year we drove for 2 Brothers Motorsports and Shaw Chassis. We picked up 2 more feature wins and several 2nd’s and 3rd’s. We improved tremendously on slick tracks.
I want to thank Tod Buckhalter at Hassy Chassis for several good years of racing and I want to thank Jr. and Tommy Nolan of 2 Brothers Motorsports and Kevin Shaw of Shaw Chassis for allowing me to come on board and be a part of their team.
We intend to run the same Shaw Chassis for 2010. It is nearly complete and will soon be decal’ed and ready to race. I want to thank Billy Lloyd Racing Engines and Kanawha Valley Maintenance for the efforts and support!
Our support this year will be 2 Brother’s Motorsports, Shaw Chassis, K-Graphics. Also receive some help, whether it be in money or labor, Billy Joe and Wanda Hammett, the Lemon Family, the Cooper Family, Jason Canepari and of course Dad and Mom. Really anxious to get he season kicked off and hope to get several wins.
On Feb. 14th I asked Kim to marry me and she said yes. So it looks like on 10/10/10 we will be getting married. She picked the date. I reminded her that racing season is still going on. She informed me that is where she wants to be in years to come on our anniversary. So everyone now knows and everyone can help remind her of it. LOL
As of now April 2nd is the first race and it will be at Skyline. Then April 3rd we will be heading to Tyler County.

Update #11 Race #18 By Kenny Johnson 05 Jul 2009
Friday we went to the long awaited Greg Schilling Memorial race at Skyline Speedway. It was a great event that brought in 55 modifieds. I messed up in qualifying and we wound up 4th fastest in our group. Started 4th in the heat and finished 3rd. They were only taking the top 2, so we started the pole of the 2nd consi. We went on to win the consi to start us 14th in the feature. We came up to finish 9th. I was happy to make the show and happy to advance positions. I want to thank all that was there and all that helped put the race on. I am already looking forward to next year’s Memorial Race.
I also want to thank Louie Krushansky, Ray, Pam and Kevin for all of their help with their GRS Modified.
This weekend we plan to go to Skyline on Friday and Ohio Valley on Saturday. Hope to see you there!

Update #10 Race #13, #14, #15, #16 & #17 By Kenny Johnson 30 Jun 2009
Sorry about not keeping you all up to date as often as I should. But here is info. on the last 5 races in the back up Team #23 car.
Friday, 6/12, Skyline: Track was slick, as usual and we started 3rd in the heat right behind Jeremy Berwanger. We ran a close 2nd to Jeremy for a while until a pin came out of the right front shock, but we still finished 2nd. This started us 5th in the feature and we came up to 3rd then faded back to 6th, but came back to finish 5th. We really didn’t make many changes, figured we would learn a little bit about the car.
Saturday, 6/13, Ohio Valley: We struggled a bit in the heat race and finished 3rd. Made a small change for the feature and started 5th and came up to 2nd. Louie’s car was on 3 wheel brakes and it got me. I had hit the brakes a little too hard and almost spun the car out. This cost us 3 positions and we finished another 5th.
Saturday, 6/20, Ohio Valley: We started 6th in the heat and came up to finish a close 2nd to Jimmy Fordyce. Did the pill redraw and drew outside pole. We tried 3 times to get a lap in, but finally had to go to single file. Jason Brookover led every lap and we finished a close 2nd.
Friday, 6/26, Skyline: Jake drew our pill this week and it’s a good thing I like him or he’d be fired. We started 8th in our heat race. Rain had hit prior to hot laps and the track was real racy. We were able to come up through the pack and win the heat. This started us on the outside pole. Ran 2nd to Jeremy Berwanger for a good while, then Jeremy Blake passed us. We finished 3rd for a respectable night.
Saturday, 6/27, Ohio Valley: Started 4th in the heat race and was working on the leader, but the car just wouldn’t come off the corner very strong and we fell back to finish 3rd. started 6th in the feature, but the outside pole sitter could not make the start. So this moved us up to 4th, then on the first start the outside pole sitter gets taken out before the first lap. So now we are starting outside pole. We take the early lead and we lead 18 of the 20 laps. Unfortunately I choked and cost us a win. I was aggravated at myself for throwing a win away.
This Friday is a race that I have been waiting for all year and hope that you can make it. It is the Greg schilling Memorial race at Skyline Speedway. We also plan to go to Tyler County for the Dickson classic on Saturday. Hope to see you there!

Update #9 Race #9, #10, #11 & #12 By Kenny Johnson 05 Jun 2009
These updates have taken a back burner for the past couple of weekends. On Friday (5/22) we started 6th in the heat race and finished 2nd. Believe it or not, the track had some bite, but by feature time, that bite went away. We started 4th in the feature and finished 5th.
Saturday (5/23) we went to Ohio Valley and started 5th in our heat and finished 2nd. We did the pill redraw and we would start 4th. The car was good in the feature except I didn’t have any rear brakes. So we finished 3rd and I didn’t destroy the car.
Sunday (5/24) we changed rotors and pads and went to Tyler Co. for $3,000 to win. They had 49 cars and we set 6th fastest time. They inverted the top 4 in each heat and we started 4th in the 6th heat. We actually took the lead going down the back chute entering turn 3, but the rear brakes were not working again. We managed to hold on to 3rd place. We found that we had boiled the fluid the night before, so we changed the fluid and started 2nd in the consi. We won the consi to start us 15th in the feature. We ran around that position for 8 or 10 laps and I did not feel we were going to come up thru the pack, so I elected to bring the car to the infield.
The following Saturday (5/29) we went to KC for $1,000 to win. We started 3rd in our heat and finished 2nd. This started us 5th in the feature and we worked our way to 3rd. We were running with the top 2 but I scraped the front chute wall and flattened my right front tire, which then put me into turn 1 wall.
Not great results but had a decent car.
At this time, I have elected to give the car back to Hassy Chassis. Tod has been extremely supportive the past 3 years. The word has gotten out that I will not be driving and already have a couple of options. For immediate racing I will be in the Team #23 back up car. Louie, Pam, Ray and Barney have become great friends of our team and once they heard, they got on the phone to offer up a ride. So we won’t be out this weekend, but should be out next weekend. I’ll post later where we will be.

Update #8 Race #8 By Kenny Johnson 19 May 2009
Friday we went to Skyline and I’ll have to admit, I had high expectations. But it ended in disappointment. Pill draw put us starting 6th in the heat and we wound up finishing 4th. My foot was overpowering my brain and I was not going anywhere. In the feature some changes were made and I maintained better throttle control but finished a disappointing 7th place. The next morning I found another screw up on my part and that was I didn’t have the springs on the car that I thought I did. Skyline is a struggle, but I’m not helping it at all!
Saturday we went to K-C for all of the other tracks rained out. We made it to K-C and hot lapped and then the rain came and made things a muddy mess. The promoter waited the shower out and then began to run the track in. Some racers including myself went out to help the effort but it was all for not. I thought since he waited it out that he was committed to getting it in so I took our car out and got it terribly muddy just for him to give up. Next time I’ll wait in the trailer. But I need to thank Tim and Jake Cooper for coming out and washing the car. I’m certain they’ll be speaking up the next time I get the idea to go help run in the track. LOL
This weekend we plan on racing 3 nights. Friday we will be at Skyline and at the Valley on Saturday. Sunday Tyler County will be paying $3,000 to win and this will be a huge Modified show. Hope to see you there!

Update #7 Race #7 By Kenny Johnson 10 May 2009
Saturday with the Valley cancelling, we decided to go to KC for the first time this year. My lucky charm, Kim, drew us a #4 pill which started us on the pole of the 4th heat. We went on to win the heat and this would start us 4th in the feature. We ran 3rd the entire race but with 2 laps to go we dove under the 2nd place car and attempted to chase down the leader coming up just short. I felt like we had the winning car but 2nd is better than 3rd.
This weekend we plan to be at Skyline on Friday and at the Valley on Saturday. Hope to see you there!

Update #6 Race # 6 By Kenny Johnson 07 May 2009
Wow, where has the week went? Sorry for being so late with this update. Saturday Mother Nature tried to win out, but Muskingum County Speedway was able to get their show in. they had 35 mods and we were 6th fastest in qualifying. This started us on the outside pole of the 2nd heat along side Rick Aukland and Norman Aaronholt and Rob Stambaugh in the 2nd row. We went on to win the heat and this would start us on the outside pole of the feature. Cooper has the watch on us and saw our lap times were getting slower as the race went on. So we decided to go with a medium tire compound. At the start of the race it was not going and we fell back to 6th. But once the tired fired it was progressing forward again and we finished 5th. The car was better up there than it has been the past few years. So we have something to work with. I had some additional help at the track; the Lemon Family jumped in and helped me out quite a bit. They definitely weren’t afraid to get dirty! LOL
This weekend we will be at the Valley on Saturday, unless Mother Nature has her way. If they cancel we will look at other Saturday night tracks. Hope to see you there!

Update #5 Race #5 By Kenny Johnson 27 Apr 2009
Saturday we were at Ohio Valley and we set fast time with a 16.36. We won the heat race and on the pill redraw we had to start 4th in the feature. Nolan Dalton took the lead and we pressured him the entire race along with Kenny Riddle. The track was rough and Nolan ran right in the middle. I ran everywhere that he wasn’t. I even tried knocking the wall down a few times in turns 1 & 2, which didn’t help me a bit. But in the end we held on to 2nd.
I wan to thank TLC (Tom Lemon Co.) and his family for their support. Very dedicated race fans and they always provide a fun time!
This weekend I will be playing it by ear. The only certain thing is that we will be at the Valley on Saturday. We will have to wait and see about Friday.
Hope to see you there!

Update #4 Race #3 & #4 By Kenny Johnson 20 Apr 2009
Friday, we headed over to Skyline, in which we found 23 cars. I let Lexi draw my pill and she drew a 49. This started us dead last (8th) in our heat. Yep, you guessed it, she got fired. We worked our way to 4th and passed for 3rd and the caution came out. For whatever reason the line up put us back in 5th and we wound up finishing 4th. This started us 11th in the feature. We were making advances towards the front, but came in contact with another car and it flattened our right rear tire just 2 laps into the feature and caused us a DNF.
Saturday Ohio Valley had postponed their opening night to April 25th, so we went to Tyler County in hopes of repeating. Dad drew us pill #33 which put us on the outside pole of the 1st heat along side Norman Aaronholt. The track was already dusty and slick. I led lap one, but lost the lead to Aaronholt and eventually lost 2nd to Mark Dickson which put us finishing 3rd. Started 5th in the feature and unfortunately was not advancing, I believe we fell back to 8th or so and a lap car had hit the wall and bounced back in front of me which took us out for another DNF.
This weekend I plan to just run the Valley on Saturday. The weather is supposed to be beautiful, so you ought to make plans to come. Hope to see you there!

Update #3 Race #: 2 By Kenny Johnson 14 Apr 2009
Even though the weather was chilly and misting rain, we had a great time at Race Day at Martin Elementary. My nephew (Evan Sheets) got to ride on the car during the 2 victory laps. We’ll be looking forward to next year also.
Races were cancelled at Midway on Friday and my decision to go to Eastside Speedway in Virginia was changed due to travel expenses and time. So we planned to go back to Tyler County, but they cancelled because of the weather. So, Midway utilized Saturday as their race day. They had more than 34 modifieds. My qualifying run was not all that fast and we started 5th in the heat race. Came up to 3rd and was battling for 2nd, but Larry Holbrook mad a late race charge from 4th to 2nd and moved us back to 4th. This started us 15th in the feature and we stayed out of trouble and avoided the wrecks to finish 5th. Car was decent in the feature, but not what we needed to win.
This weekend we plan on going to Skyline on Friday and Ohio Valley on Saturday, both being opening nights. Hope to see you there!

Update #2
Race #1
By: Kenny Johnson Date: 4-5-09
Well, the first race of the season took place this past weekend and it was at Tyler County Speedway. Not sure of the car count, but they had enough to run a consolation race. I drew pill #49 to start us 4th in the 2nd heat. I went out for hot laps and I had an issue with our steering. It was like I had no power steering and our first thought was the steering box was bad. So before the heat we changed the power steering box. Went out for the heat race and it was no better. We were lucky and won our heat race. We worked throughout the night trying to find the cause but with no luck. We started outside pole of the feature beside Darren Glover. Darren took the early lead and we were trying to find a line around the rough racetrack to make a pass. At one point Norman Aaronholt passed both Darren and I and I was able to pass Darren as well. I now followed Norman and it was difficult to make any kind of pass due to the track conditions and the fact that I could not steer the car. But with a lap and a half to go, Norman made a mistake and I made the pass and held on the last lap for our first win of the year. The win kind of made me forget about how tired and wore out I was from driving a car without power steering. Hopefully this win will be one of many for my 25 year anniversary.
I want to thank Tim Cooper, Jason Canepari, Jason’s brother Drew and Butch Malone for helping out at the track!
I also want to thank Keith and Cy at K-Graphics for designing a beautiful car. Hopefully we will have pictures from track photographers to post on our web site soon.
I believe we can officially announce everyone that is on the car. Please support all those that you can: Wendy’s Restaurants, K-Graphics, Hassy Chassis, Eddy Chiropractic, H&S Construction, Laurita Excavating, Balderson Construction, Dickson Racing Shocks, Wrisco Aluminum, Poske’s Performance Parts, WOC Designs, Billy Lloyd Racing Engines, Billy Joe and Wanda Hammett, The Lemon Family, Dad & Mom and Kim.
I also want to announce that a Foundation has been established for Greg Schilling who passed away Nov. 25th, 2008. K-Graphics is donating a memorial sticker that is $5 each. Money collected will be handed over to the Foundation as a donation to help raise money for great causes. If anyone is interested, please contact me and I will get you however many you want.
This coming Friday we will be making a visit to Martin Elementary School for their Race Day! It gives the kids a chance to come out and see the racecars and ask some questions and trust me they ask some questions too. . . LOL
Weather permitting, it looks as though we will go to Midway on Friday night and on Saturday we will go to Eastside Speedway in Waynesboro, Va. for $1,500 to win. Keep checking in and I’ll try to post changes as soon as I know them. Hope to see you there!

Update #1 Race #: By Kenny Johnson 05 Feb 2009
Preparing for 2009 – 25 Years;
2009 will make my 25th year racing; wow that is hard to believe. It’s probably even harder to believe for Dad. Dad is the one that after driving for 10 years gave up his racing so that I could start mine. That is a very unselfish man and a terrific Dad. So when he complains about all the racing I do, he can know that it is all his fault. . . LOL
We have been out in the garage often preparing the car and the garage for this coming racing season. Jason took the car back to Hassy and set it on the jig and made some minor changes. Tim Cooper and Brian Dennewitz have been getting the garage in order and now Tim will be starting on the trailer. The Lemon family (Tom, Pam, Trey and Lane) have been out several times and have worked on stripping the old decals off the trailer and have helped with the car as well. I put a new body on the car and gave it a new look with silver aluminum. K-Graphics will soon being doing the decals. Hassy has renewed our parts for the season. Billy Lloyd has our engine ready and I also bought another engine so we should be good and ready for 2009.
We intend to update our web site soon to celebrate our 25th year. I’ll be working with Wayne Cornell to see what we can come up with. I also will be updating our links or sponsors page. Along with many of the sponsors that we had last year, I want to announce that we have picked up Wendy’s Restaurants for the 2009 season. I will provide location information at a later date, but definitely support your local Wendy’s. Also at a later date I will announce all of our sponsors for 2009.
Our schedule will be released soon for we are still waiting on area tracks to put out there schedule. It will be similar to last years schedule with us running locally and then out of town some at some money races.
Over the years I have experienced the loss of some close racing friends, such as Tom Willoughby, Bill Shortridge and Mike “Bubba” Whited. This past fall I lost 2 more friends. Jack Shutts, long time flagman/scorer who has been friend/enemy (LOL, sorry Jack, remember the false teeth story?) of the family for many years. Also, a real close friend, who just couldn’t be beat as a friend/brother; Greg Schilling. Greg will be thought of often when I am out on the track and I hope to obtain a lot of his abilities as a driver. Greg was always in control and I hope he can help me with that this year. This is kind of an early announcement, but Mike McPherson #22 has initiated the Greg Schilling Memorial Race at Skyline Speedway on July 3rd. This will be a special race to many people and Mike deserves a tremendous amount of credit for pulling it off.
That’s all for now and I will let you all know how things progress over the next month or so.

Update #31 Race #:53 By Kenny Johnson 26 Oct 2008
Well this past weekend ended our 2008 season. We raced at K-C Speedway at the Dirt Track World Championship. I wish I could write that we ended on a good note, but I have to tell it like it is. . . . .
They had 110 modifieds and we drew pills for group qualifying. We were in group #5 with names like Rick Aukland, Kenny Riddle, Shon Flannery & Keith Berner. I went out to hot lap and was trying to get a good lap in without the traffic. Going down the back chute the yellow comes out and I saw an open line on the top. I kept the car too high and get in the slime and from there it was over. I slammed into the yuke tires and rolled the car. Of course I made the mistake of undoing my seat belts and that made it worse on me. They ended up rolling me back on my wheels before I could get out. Once out, I looked things over and saw the damage. A track worker took me back to the pits and I began pulling parts out that would be needed. As I did that a large crowd gathered around to see what the car looked like. The next thing I knew there was a swarm of people gathering tools and parts and started putting the car back together so we could make qualifying. Well it worked and we qualified 2nd fast in our group and 8th fastest overall. They inverted the top 3 in the heat and this started us front row outside with Riddle on the pole. Riddle pulled me slightly on the start but I stuffed into turn one with little room on the high side and I smacked the wall. I gathered it up and took a charge down the back chute only to smack the wall again. Now I fell back to 4th but came racing back to 2nd and caught Riddle and was pressuring him for the lead but I went into turn #1 too hard and when I steered to the right the right front tire hit the frame rail and I spun out sending us to the tail in 18th. Not exactly sure how many laps were left, but we came from 18th to finish 9th. We were on the high side the entire time scraping the wall nearly every lap. We started 11th in the consi and took to the high side again and were passing for the lead near lap 8 or so. The car was very fast and I was lovin’ it. When passing for the lead, Rick Aukland did not know I was on the high side and he was coming up the track off of turn 2. So I let my car go up the track and I jumped the cushion and put the car up on the flat. The right rear loaded and unloaded the left rear and I was wide open and I spun it out, AGAIN! I went to the tail knowing I blew my chance again. We were making an attempt to pass some cars and a wreck happened in 3 and 4 about mid pack. I was committed to the outside and ended up getting wedged between a car and the wall. We climbed the wall and got on top of it and then came crashing down. At that point I figured the car was done. I got pushed into the infield and got out and looked at the car. Realized the car did not have any flat tires, nor did it have any broken parts. With 3 laps to go I decided what the heck, go back out and see if a miracle could happen. Well, in all honesty I knew better, but I gave it a try and we made it back to finish 7th. In the end I disappointed a lot of people including myself and my crew. I was in the show 2 different times and took myself out of it. We did get a lot of attention from numerous race fans though. Although that doesn’t pay the bills it does make me feel good knowing fans appreciate hard charging racing.
I’d like to thank and acknowledge those that helped put the car back together after I rolled it. Tim Cooper, Jason Canepari, Dad, Chad Nelson, Harley Hall, Howard Santee, AJ Huber, Mike McPherson, Jeremy Berwanger, Todd Gorrell, Kenny Riddle, Alf Litman, Tod Frye, Allan Hamrick, Dustin Sprouse, Ryan Stoops, Kenny Lilly, Tom Lemon, Trey Lemon, Layne Lemon. I hope that I have not forgotten anyone. There were also several teams that came over to offer up help and/or parts. It was a time of need and everyone came to the rescue.
I am officially calling it a season and what a season it was. We had 9 wins, 9 seconds & 6 thirds which are some pretty respectable stats. We also achieved winning both the AMRA National and Road Warrior Tour Points Championships. That makes us a 3 time Road Warrior Tour Champion and a 2 time National Champion.
As I have mentioned before, there have been several people that have played a role in helping to obtain this championship winning season. Tod Buckhalter of Hassy Chassis has put his faith in me; Tim Cooper and Jason Canepari to represent Hassy Chassis by letting us run the Hassy Chassis House car. Tim Cooper has been there all summer long and keeps things in order and tries to keep me in line as well when I am on the track. Jason Canepari who has provided us some good set ups and knows what changes to make at the track.
Sponsorship wise we have had help from the following: Hassy Chassis, Racersmate, K-Graphics, Dickson Racing Shocks, Laurita Excavating, Zemba Bros. Construction, Billy Lloyd Racing Engines, H&S Construction, Balderson Construction, Wrisco Aluminum, Billy Joe and Wanda Hammett & Gene’s Trailer Sales. I also need to thank Wayne Cornell for his effort in keeping our web site maintained and user friendly.
My plans are to have a special edition car next year for it will be my 25th year racing. I also plan to get T-shirts made this winter to celebrate 25 years and celebrate our AMRA Championships. I will be working with Tom & Pam Lemon in getting these shirts and they will be selling them.
I want to take this time to mention 3 friends and to keep them in your prayers for they are all having health issues; Greg Schilling, Jack Shutts and Steve Armentrout.
I will send out another update once I have something to inform you all about. Until then have a good winter and drop me a line when you can!

Update #30 Race #52 By Kenny Johnson 14 Oct 2008
This past weekend was the $5,000 to win show at Midway and they had 48 modifieds on hand. We were in group #5 and set fast time in our group. We started on the pole along side Dave Groves. Dave took the early lead on the high side and we were able to run with him by running the middle. On the 2nd lap he got a push and we were able to make the pass and go on to get the win. This put us 5th in the dash and we finished 5th. In the feature we started 5th and maintained 5th for a good little while racing on the bottom. I realized of a change that I considered making, but chose not to. I wish I had put more gear in the car to run the bottom, but I didn’t and I think it hurt our run. I did run the top, the middle and the bottom in an attempt to try and advance. In the end we wound up finishing 10th. I wasn’t real satisfied with the finish, but the car was in one piece and we’ll take notes on what to do for next year.
This weekend we will be going to K-C Speedway for the Dirt Track world Championship which pays the modifieds $3,000 to win. We qualify, run our heat races and consolation races on Thursday night. Then our feature is Saturday night before the big late model race. I love K-C and have high hopes for a really good run! Hope to see you there!

Update #29 Race #51 By Kenny Johnson 07 Oct 2008
We went to Eldora this past weekend for the UMP Nationals. They had 122 modifieds and we qualified 9th fastest overall and 2nd fast in our group. They invert the top 4 in each heat, so we started 3rd. The outside pole sitter and the 4th place car took off and were 1st and 2nd, the pole sitter was 3rd and we were 4th. In turn 3 and 4 the pole sitter got a little sideways and I ramped over his right rear and we each lost a position. I finally got past him and chased down the 3rd place car and was about to make a pass on him when the yellow came out. When we went back racing and went down the back chute, the 3rd place car chose the low line, the 1st and 2nd place car chose the high line and I chose an even higher line. I blasted around the 2nd place car only to find the leader blew up and he went high. I had no where to go and blasted him hard. It tore up my left front shock, lower control arm, upper control arm and the tire and wheel was just dangling on the car. I fell back to 8th coming off of turn 4 and stood on the gas drove it down into turn one and hesitated and hit the wall. Drove it down into turn 3 and hesitated and hit the wall. I apparently wasn’t getting the point that the car was broke, cause when I went into turn one I didn’t hesitate and made it thru without hitting the wall and I continued to do this thru the end of the race and made it back to 5th and almost passed for 4th. Once I slowed down it was difficult getting the car back to the pits. Now this driving got us some new fans, but unfortunately none of them had any money. It was said over the weekend that the people with money are probably sitting back saying I’m glad he don’t drive for me cause I couldn’t afford him. LOL! Oh well, we got it fixed and was ready for the consolation race on Saturday in which we were starting 6th and they were taking the top 2. As it turns out the 2 cars in front of me scratched and did not start the race which moved us up to the outside pole. We took the lead and went on to win by 4 car lengths or so. This started us 19th in the feature and I immediately went to the high side and was passing cars left and right and made it up to 7th. I got behind #135 and could not get by him. I tried low, middle and just could not make the pass. After several cars went back by us I decided to go even higher and it bit me. I got tied up in the cushion of turn 4 and several more cars got by us. I went back to passing cars and made it back up to the #135 and was finally able to pass him on the last lap. They wound up scoring us in 15th place. We thought it should have been 11th or 12th and thought they may have had a few lap cars out of place in the finishing order. But all in all, I love racing at Eldora and am somewhat pleased with our results.
This weekend we go to Midway for $5,000 to win show. This should be a jammed pack field of modifieds also. Hope to see you there!

Update #28 Race #50 By Kenny Johnson 28 Sep 2008
Saturday we went to the Finale at the Valley and they had 30 modifieds. We drew pill #2 in which I thought was a good pill draw but they decided to qualify. We still went out and set fast time with a 16.89. We started the pole of the 1st heat along side Joe Cox. Joe got the win but not without being pressured the entire time by us. We had to do another pill draw for the line up of the feature and we were to start 4th. During the late model feature the rain started and they had to send the cars off the track. We waited around for the rain to let up, and then several cars went out to get the track ran in and we were one of them. Needless to say we couldn’t see much of the car for it was covered in mud. Since the delay lasted quite a while, there were some cars that chose to go home. One of them was an outside pole sitter Jeff Woods. This moved us up to that spot. The 1st 2 starts we took the lead but a caution would line us up double file. The 3rd time we had to go single file and this put the pole sitter Darrin McDonald in the lead. We pressured him for the 1st 2 laps, but I hit a hole in turn 3 & 4 that allowed Darrin to pull away. We chased him down and caught back up to him, but were unable to pressure him for the pass. We got ourselves another 2nd place finish.
It is confirmed that we got both Championships in AMRA and Team #23 produced a proper big league celebration by dumping a cooler full of ice water on me after the feature! That’s some good friend’s right there and I sure appreciated the gesture. Although I some how think they got some enjoyment out of it! LOL
This weekend, we plan to go to Eldora for the UMP Nationals. Last years race had like 112 cars and we set 6th fastest time. Hopefully we’ll improve on that this year.
Hope to see you there!

Update #27 Race #48 & #49 By Kenny Johnson 22 Sep 2008
WOW! I’ll start off by saying not a very good weekend of racing for KJ Motorsports. We were at Skyline for 2 days and 2 complete Road Warrior Tour shows. The Road Warrior Tour Championship was on the line & we had a 23 point lead of Dave Defibaugh and a 25 point lead over Louie Krushansky. Saturday night started out great. We set fast time in our group and 3rd fast overall. We won our heat and that put us starting 4th in the feature. Louie was starting on the pole and Defibaugh was starting 18th. In the end we finished 8th, Louie finished 4th and Defibaugh finished 10th. This changed the point lead down to 17 points over Louie and 27 points over Defibaugh. So with us finishing 8th, I felt like we definitely needed to make some changes to the car to improve for Sunday’s races. The track was even slicker than it was on Saturday. As many of you know, I really despise slick track racing, but I know we were all on the same track. We set 4th fastest time in our group and wound up finishing 4th to start us 16th in the feature. Louie started 8th in his heat and made it to 3rd, but was penalized for a jump start and that forced him to run the consi, in which he finished 2nd to start him right behind us in 18th. Defibaugh finished 2nd in his heat to start him 8th in the feature. Mathematically any of the 3 of us could win the Road Warrior Tour Championship at this point. The way I had it figured is if Louie finished 9 positions ahead of us, he would win the championship and Defibaugh had to finish 14 positions ahead of us. So the race started and I intended to race hard and get to the front. It wasn’t long into the race that I knew I was in no way a contender and I was just trying to keep my nose clean and salvage a finish. Well Louie unfortunately caught a uke tire and took out his power steering, so he was trying to hang on also. Dave was conservatively working his way up after falling back several positions. Then what we feared happening happened, we got caught up in a wreck and it flattened our right front tire and took us out of the race giving us a 19th place finish. So now all we could do is sit and wait for the end of the race to see what the other 2 would do. Well, again misfortune struck Louie and he also got caught up in a wreck that tore his car up and he would finish 17th. So now it was waiting to see where Defibaugh finished. It was getting nerve racking, but Defibaugh finished 7th and they announced that we won the Road Warrior Tour Championship points by 9 points. What a relief, for this past week and weekend played havoc on my nerves and that was the exact reason I approached the entire season as I did but not following points. We just raced to be racing and did not worry about the points. Well when it got down to the wire, I worried.
The other point’s battle was also on the line for National points. We were in a close battle with Jeremy Berwanger. The way it played out, is if I got a 2nd place or better, we’d win the points. If Jeremy got a 2nd place or better, then we would go into next weekend at the Valley to decide the point’s champion. Saturday night Jeremy fell short in his heat race to start him deep in the field. Although this did not slow him down, he made it all the way to a 3rd place finish. So now he had Sunday to accomplish a top 2 finish. But as he was working his way into the top 3 a car pinched him off and he spun out and was forced to the tail. Once there and with the track conditions not being very racy he did not advance very far and he finished in 10th place. So “unofficially” we have also sewed up the National point’s championship as well.
Like I said in the beginning, this was a not a very good weekend for racing stats, but an outstanding weekend for KJ Motorsports, Hassy Chassis, Racersmate, Dickson Racing Shocks, Billy Lloyd Racing Engines, K-Graphics, H&S Construction, Zemba Bros., Laurita Excavating, Balderson Construction, Gene’s Trailer Sales, Wrisco Aluminum, Billy Joe and Wanda Hammett.
I need to thank some key people that helped us obtain these 2 Championships. First is Tod Buckhalter at Hassy Chassis, for supplying us with the Hassy Chassis House car. Second is Tim Cooper who has spent many hours in the garage and many hours on the road going to the races. Jason Canepari who has helped to identify the various set ups that have helped us win races this year.
Many fans that have become followers of KJ Motorsports, such as Billy Joe and Wanda Hammett, Carl and Sharon Walker, Ralph Whited, Michael Willoughby, Jake Cooper, Loretta Shortridge, Tom and Pam Lemon and of course Mom and Dad. Although Mom doesn’t go very much, I know she thinks of me often, because when it doesn’t rain out, I know she didn’t do a rain dance. And Dad, well there is not a bigger supporter of KJ Motorsports around.
Hats off to Team #23 and team #44J whom we have built a good friendship over this past season and I am already looking forward to racing them in 2009. But Team #77, #23 & #44J brought it down to the wire for the point’s battle and I have the up most respect for all 3 of them and can appreciate everything they had worked for! Thanks for making this year an all round good year.
Next weekend, we will be at Ohio Valley racing the “Finale at the Valley”. Hope to see you there!

Update #26 Race #47 By Kenny Johnson 14 Sep 2008
Saturday we went back to Ohio Valley where this time I drew pill #31 causing me to start 6th in my heat race. We managed to get to 2nd and raced the heat winner Rod Sayre pretty hard but we came up just short. But we did redraw for the feature and that put us on the outside pole. We took the lead from the get go and never looked back. The car was extremely good and we picked up win #9 for the year at 4 different tracks.
This weekend is a really big weekend and we will be at Skyline on Saturday and Sunday for 2 separate Road Warrior Races. Now here is what is on the line. I don’t believe I have spoken of this all year, but we are leading the AMRA National points and they end the last weekend of Sept. So that is in just 2 more weeks. We are also leading the AMRA Road Warrior Tour points and they end next Sunday. So we have a tremendous opportunity to win both championships in the same year. We’ll see how it goes and whatever happens just happens. But I will do my best to win and clinch these titles.
Hope to see you there!

Saturday we went to Ohio Valley where I drew pill #1. We started on the pole of the heat and won the heat race. I then drew pill #10 which started us on the outside pole of the feature. We then went on lead every lap and get the win. The car was really good. Hopefully we can continue our good finishes for the rest of the season.

Update #24 Race #45 By Kenny Johnson 01 Sep 2008

Update #24
Race #45
By: Kenny Johnson Date: 9-1-08
This weekend was a 2 day Road Warrior Tour race at Tyler County Speedway paying $2,000 to win. They had 45 modifieds and they did group qualifying. We were fast time in our group and 3rd fast overall. We started on the pole of the first heat beside Louie Krushansky. Louie got the run off of turn 2 to take the lead. We pressured him for most of the race, but could not complete a pass. This would start us 5th in the feature. When the feature went to line up Louie was unable to for he had engine troubles. This moved us up a row to start 3rd. We ran 3rd for several laps following Jeremy Berwanger. The 4th place car started putting pressure on me, for Berwanger was holding us up. With about 10 to go or so, I finally stuffed it in the high side and went around Berwanger for 2nd. The leader, Brian Probst had nearly a straight a way lead. We were able to run him down and with about 5 to go went around him on the high side of turn 4. When I went down into turn 1 I attempted to settle down. Well, when you run the high side, it should be hammer down. My hesitation created a push in the car and I had to brake check to get the car turned. When I did that, Brian got back by me and then he moved into the high line and from there I applied as much pressure as I could, but fell short. Needless to say, my screw up cost us a win and also cost us $1,175. It paid $2,000 to win and 2nd place paid $825. Another 2nd which makes the 8th time this year. I suppose being the first loser isn’t a real bad thing, but I sure would like to get the wins!
Next weekend, Skyline is moving to Saturday’s for the rest of the year. So we won’t be going anywhere on Friday and we will go to Ohio Valley on Saturday.
Hope to see you there!

Update #23
Race #43 & #44
By: Kenny Johnson Date: 8-24-08
Friday we went to Skyline and Dad continued his streak in drawing me a good pill. We started front row outside of the 3rd heat. We won the heat to start us 3rd in the feature. We took the early lead and managed a little distance. As the race went on Louie Krushansky was able to make the middle work and my high line was working my right rear tire. I knew the tire was getting hot and at that point my run for the lead ended. We managed to hold on to 2nd for a good solid finish.
Saturday we went to the Valley for the Topless race paying $1,200 tow in. We set 3rd fastest time. We started on the pole of the 3rd heat and won the heat. The pill redraw put us starting 3rd. We were running 3rd behind Bird Wilson and pressure him pretty good, but he had the line each time I tried to get under him. As the race was winding down I again worked my right rear tire too much trying to pass Bird. So we got a 3rd place finish. A solid weekend, but of course I prefer a winning weekend.
Making their way to the Valley was co-workers Craig Mason and Andy Norman and their wives. Bryce Goodwin made his yearly debut and Michael Willoughby showed up again. Michael stated he felt like each time he shows up I don’t win. I don’t believe he’s the jinx because there are plenty of times I don’t win when he isn’t there. Could be I’m the jinx.. . . LOL
This weekend is another Road Warrior race at Tyler County Speedway. It’s a 2 day show, Friday and Saturday, and then the Hillbilly 100 is Sunday.
Hope to see you there!

Update #22
Race #41 & #42
By: Kenny Johnson Date: 8-17-08
Friday we had a Road Warrior Tour race at Beckley Motor Speedway. It was our first visit there this year. They only had 19 cars and we set 2nd fast time to put us on the pole of the 2nd heat. We got the win and this put us on the outside pole of the feature. We did go on to win the feature in really strong fashion. The car was on the money for the track conditions. Just dad and I went down, but when times got rushed for us, Team #23 came to our aide and helped get us squared away. Although I learned that they were interested in each of them getting a third of the winnings, but there was 4 of them. Needless to say, I hope to repay the favor one day than to pay them with money. LOL Thanks for the help Team #23!
Saturday we had the car in the Parkersburg Homecoming parade for Ohio Valley Speedway. Dad drove the car and I pushed him with the 4 wheeler. We had a good time and I’d say all the kids that were there got plenty of candy.
Then we headed to K-C Speedway. They had close to 30 cars or so and we drew a fair pill to start us 4th in the heat. When they dropped the green I followed the outside pole sitter into turn one. When I saw he didn’t go high, I shot to the highline. At the last minute in the middle of the corner he decided to go high and we hit and both ended up going off the track but did not bring out the yellow. Drove our way back to 5th but spun out causing us to go to the tail. Finished the heat in 6th. Cooper and I made some changes for the consi in which we were starting 7th. We came up to finish 2nd in the consi, just a lap short of possibly winning it. We were supposed to start 18th in the feature, but the scorers had me lined up in 20th. So we made our way from 20th to a 3rd place finish in 20 laps. Very pleased with the car.
I want to wish Tim and Lisa Cooper a Happy 21st Anniversary. They married for better or for worse. He couldn’t have done any better and she couldn’t have done any worse. . . . LOL
This weekend we go to Skyline on Friday and on Saturday we will be at Ohio Valley for the Topless race paying $1,200 to win. Hope to see you there!

By: Kenny Johnson Date: 8-10-08
Friday we went to Skyline for a Road warrior Tour race. We set fast time and won the first heat race. Really had high expectations for the feature starting from the pole and all. But with me driving I should have known better! It didn’t take very long for me to give up on the bottom and head to the high side. I couldn’t make it work like we had other times over there this season. Once I moved down to the middle, I was at least maintaining and racing the cars around me. We wound up finishing a disappointing 7th place. Not at all what I wanted, but then again, it was my fault we finished there.
Saturday we went to the Valley. I drew a good pill to start us outside pole of the 3rd heat. We won the heat and on the redraw we started 4th in the feature. I took a little time but we managed to take the lead and went on to get our 6th win of the season.
This weekend we go to Beckley for another Road Warrior Tour race and on Saturday we plan to go to K-C Speedway. Hope to see you there!

Update #20
Race #37 & #38
By: Kenny Johnson Date: 8-5-08
Friday we left for Brushcreek for a $1,000 to win show. They had a little over 60 cars which was a good car count for Friday nights show. We qualified 8th quickest overall and 2nd quick in our group. We started outside pole of the 3rd heat. We did not get the jump on the pole sitter, so we followed on the high side the entire heat race and finished 2nd. This started us 9th in the feature. The car wasn’t too bad, for we came up to 5th at one point, then the car started fading back. I couldn’t figure out why it started to be ill handling? Under caution I noticed a puff of smoke out the right side so I pulled off. The smoke was an oil leak and we also discovered why the car was ill handling, our 6th coil had come unhooked. That made me fell a little better.
Saturday was my 40th birthday and I was hoping for a Harley as a present. Instead all I got was a hard time from everyone who saw the banner that Kim had K-Graphics make! Our qualifying lap was not that good, for we ended up 4th quick in our group. We finished 3rd to put us in the show. We started 11th in the feature but we never really got the car dialed in for the track conditions that they had. We wound up finishing a disappointing 16th place. Our weekend was no where near what I expected it to be. After last years run, there were several people that predicted us to be up front and I didn’t come thru. Hopefully next year!
This weekend we have a Road Warrior Tour race at Skyline on Friday, and then we will be back to Ohio Valley on Saturday. We hope to see you there!

Update #19 Race #35 & #36 By Kenny Johnson 27 Jul 2008

Update #19
Race #35 & #36
By: Kenny Johnson Date: 7-27-08
We started our weekend on Thursday by going to Muskingum County Speedway for $1,000 to win. Dad drew us a great pill to start us on the outside pole of the first heat. We got the win and this put us on the pole of the feature. I was somewhat hesitant for I really didn’t think the car was that good in the heat. I made some changes but as I somewhat figured I wasn’t that good. Part of the problem was our tire compound choice and we were also trying a new suspension part. I faded back several positions and at the halfway point decided to pull off for I was not going to gain any more money. So unfortunately we had a DNF.
Friday we changed the car around in hopes of finding the set up to get us back on track. We went to Skyline and since dad stayed home I had to find someone to draw my pill. I went to 13 year old Reilly Benson (sprint car driver Brian Benson’s daughter) to pull my pill. Did I ever make a good choice, for she got us the #1 pill. We started the pole of the first heat and won to put us on the pole of the feature. We took the early lead and I was running the light poles. Yes, I said I was running the very bottom. I’ll tell ya it wasn’t easy but I did stay there the entire race. With 2 laps to go, Rick Aukland passed us on the outside. That rarely happens for I am the one on the outside. But I was happy with the 2nd place finish.
Saturday we got up early to head to Stateline Speedway near Jamestown, NY. It was a 5 hour and 45 minute tow. We got the car unloaded and changed some things around. The track crew heavily watered the track and then we had a rain shower. One thing led to another and at 9:40 pm we were headed home. That’s an awful long way to get rained out, not including the $350 in diesel fuel. At this time we do not know when the make up date is.
Well this is the big weekend and one we have been waiting for a year now. It is the Harley race at
Brushcreek Speedway which pays $10,000 to win or a new Harley Davidson. We finished 2nd last year and it was a heck of a race. I hope we can make another good race out of it again. I am expecting more cars this year and it definitely won’t be an easy one to win, but we’ll give it everything we have! If you want to see a great modified show, you should plan on making this trip. We have a $1,000 to win show Friday at Brushcreek and then the $10,000 to win on Saturday.
We hope to see you there!

Friday we went to Skyline hoping to redeem myself from last weeks 8th place finish. We started 4th in the heat and finished 2nd. This started us 4th in the feature. We ran 3rd for a short time then went back to 4th and finished in 4th. Car was better than last week, but still needs to be better on the slick.
Saturday we went back to the Valley and I drew pill #1 to start us on the pole of the 1st heat. We won the heat and redrew for our starting position in the feature. My luck ran out on pill draws and we started 5th. We got in 2 starts and each time there was a wreck. On the 3rd start our engine developed a miss and I pulled it to the pits. Our first assessment was not a good one and we thought we’d be down and out for a while. Sunday morning we got up and started to pull the engine and found it was less of a problem. We should have it fixed for this weekends racing with very little problems.
Our plans for this weekend are to go to Zanesville on Thursday night, Skyline on Friday and Stateline Speedway in New York for $5,000 to win on Saturday.
As an early reminder Aug. 1st and 2nd we will be at Brushcreek Speedway for $10,000 to win or a new Harley Davidson motorcycle. Brushcreek is located in Peebles, OH and hopefully will be a great weekend.
Saturday was Ralph Whited’s B-day and I hope she had a good one!

Update #17
Race #31 & #32
By: Kenny Johnson Date: 7-13-08
Friday we went to Skyline and the night started out great when Dad drew us a #4 pill to start us on the pole of the 2nd heat. I felt like we would have a shot at winning the heat. I made all of the changes for a slick track except one. Tim and Jason both mentioned the one additional change and I said, we’ll just wait and make that one in the feature. Well I wish we would have made it because the car was too tight on entry. I was running 2nd to Jeremy Berwanger and I was forcing the car to turn and wound up spinning it out. Went to the tail and brought it back to 5th. We made the changes for the feature and were starting 9th. With our past runs at Skyline I felt good about having a good run. For some reason the car would not go, it would not hook up? We wound up finishing a disappointing 8th place. I left there scratching my head!
Saturday we went back home to Ohio Valley for double features. We started 3rd in the fog out feature and when the green flew I knew we were going to struggle. The car had no drive and we managed to hang on to a 4th place finish. So we made some changes for the heat race in which we were starting the outside pole. We luckily finished a 2nd place, but the car wasn’t that good! With a pill draw we started 5th in the feature. Jason and Tim made multiple changes just to see if we could find something. End result was that we were still not that good. We came off of turn 4 for the white flag and the right front lower ball joint snapped. Lucky we kept it out of the wall and were able to get it off the racetrack for a DNF. All in all a real frustrating weekend and we will be sorting thru everything on the car to see if we can identify any problems.
Saturday I found we had many visitors that came down to see me race. A group from work came down. My sister and her family and even my Mom who hasn’t been to a race in quite a while. Also saw Jimmy Simmons and his twin girls and Michael Willoughby. This was the Bubba Whited Memorial race for the mini wedges and the winner of the race was longtime friends of Mike and Ralph #25 Ronnie Pickens.
Definitely need to thank Tim and Jason for all of their hard work and effort! Without the 2 of them I don’t think I could do this!
This weekends schedule will change and I’ll post it later. I do know Tyler will not be running on Thursday, they are scheduled for the regular racing night on Saturday. Once I decide what we are doing, I will let you know.

Mother Nature won quite a bit this weekend! Thursday and Friday Road Warrior Tour shows were both cancelled fro the rain. Saturday we were supposed to go to I-77 for a Road Warrior Tour race, but the track cancelled the sanctioned race, for they were unable to pay the RWT purse. Based on the weather conditions and track conditions, we opted to stay close to home and run the Valley. I drew a pill to start us 5th in the second heat and we were able to come up to finish 2nd. Did the pill redraw to start us 3rd in the feature, but Mother Nature showed up and it wasn’t rain, it was fog. So we will have double features next week.
Somewhat against my better judgment Cooper persuaded me to go to Midway. They were having the Jim Dunn Memorial race for late models. They pay the mod’s $700 to win but they pull pills. Well the pill pull, I put it all on Cooper and I thought he let me down. We started 6th in the 2nd heat and I shot to the outside and took the lead about 3 laps into it. This started us on the outside pole of the feature. Took the lead about 2 to 3 laps into it and recorded win #5. Need to thank Cooper for talking me into it. Of course you may know he didn’t have to work too hard at convincing me. Although on the way home I met Bambi’s mom and she was introduced to my left rear truck fender and then the side of the trailer! That $700 to win sure seemed to dwindle away pretty fast. We got home and in bed at 2:03 am. I’ll be keeping the caffeine in me today!
This week we will be at Skyline on Friday and back to the Valley for double features. Saturday night will also be the Mike ‘”Bubba” Whited memorial for the mini wedges. I’ll be presenting the trophies with his wife Ralph! Hope to see ya there!

Wednesday night we went to Skyline for they were running the mod’s with Sprint cars. We started 4th in our heat and I believe we had a decent car, but I started driving like an idiot and just took us right out of the game. Wound up finishing 7th. This started us 14th in the feature, which really put us behind. We were able to come up and finish 7th. Car was better than 7th, I just started too far back and it was hard to make up ground on that slick racetrack.
Friday we went back to Skyline and I told myself that I was not going to be an idiot. We again started 4th in the heat, but this time we went on to win the heat race. This started us on the pole of the feature. I fell to 4th pretty quick because I was stuck on the bottom. Once I moved to the high side I passed my way back to 2nd and was able to race the leader for several laps. At the checkers our front bumper was at the door of the winner. Made for a good race & I was pleased with the car.
Saturday we made the tow to Midway only to get rained out. We went back Sunday for the Road Warrior Tour race. It was raining when we pulled in the gate. The track was a mess & it took a good while to get it run in. My qualifying time was way worse than what the car was. We were 16th out of 28. We started 6th in the heat and finished 5th. The track was a one lane track and was very difficult to pass. For the feature we started 13th and I was pretty cautious for the first several laps. All that got me was passed by about 3 cars. I learned pretty quickly that no one else was being patient. Once we got spread out some I slowly made our way to an 8th place finish. I’m pretty sure we had a top 5 car, but I put us way behind again by having a bad qualifying run.
Next week is a big 3 day weekend of Road Warrior Tour racing. Thursday we will be at Tyler County Speedway, Friday is Skyline Speedway & Saturday we will be at I-77 Speedway. Hope to see you there!

I want to wish and early Happy Birthday to my sister Tammy Jo. This coming Saturday she will be . . . . . . . . Well, I’ll just let you ask her. I don’t want to get in trouble!
Friday we went to Skyline and dad drew us a #46 pill, which started us 5th in the 1st heat. He had a pretty good streak of drawing good pills, not sure what happened this week? The car was not as good as it could have been. It was loose on entry and it was just laying over on the right rear. We wound up finishing 4th in the heat which started us 7th in the feature. The car was good in the feature and feel like we had a top 3 car. We were making a pass for 5th around the outside of Roy Roush. Roy came up the track and ramped over our left front. This busted our left front tire, bent our shock and lower control arm and caused us a DNF.
Saturday we went to Midway for a Road Warrior Tour race. The weather rolled in and caused them to cancel before qualifying. They rescheduled for Saturday, June 28th.
This week we have a Wednesday show at Skyline. We will be running in support of the All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Cars. Then we will be back to Skyline on Friday and back again to Midway for the Road Warrior Tour race Hope to see you there!

Happy Father’s Day to my dad! I love ya! Also Happy Father’s Day to all the other dad’s that are out there!
Friday we went to Skyline and dad drew us a #16 pill, which started us 4th in the 2nd heat. This heat was loaded with competition and I was hoping for a good finish. At one point we took the lead and it was like the next lap or two we were running 5th. We fought our way back to finish 3rd and this would start us 5th in the feature. We made it up to 2nd bit we didn’t have anything for Mark Dickson and we had to settle for 2nd. Remember, if you ain’t first, 2nd ain’t that bad. . . .
Saturday we went to Tyler County for the Dickson Classic paying $1,000 to win. We set 4th fastest time and they rolled the dice to see how many cars would be inverted. They drew a 2, which started us on the pole of the 2nd heat. We finished 2nd to Dickson again, who was in another zip code. For the feature we started 4th and moved right into 2nd on the first start, but a yellow would have us do another double file start. We ran 4th for several laps until the 1st and 2nd car eventually dropped out with mechanical problems. This put Brian Probst and me to battle it out for the last 10 laps. We passed Brian on the high side of turn 2, but just as we did the yellow flew, putting us back to 2nd and we never got another chance at a pass. Again, if you ain’t first, 2nd ain’t that bad. Well I’m here to tell ya this 2nd stuff is really testing my patience. . . . .
This week we plan to go to Skyline on Friday and Saturday we will be heading to Midway for a Road Warrior Tour show. Hope to see you there!

I’d like to start off by wishing Keith Emrick of K-Graphics a Happy 50th Birthday!!!!!
Friday we went to Skyline and dad drew us a #10 pill, which started us outside pole of the 2nd heat. We got the heat race win to start us on the outside pole of the feature. The track was slick, but had just a touch of moisture on the top. I know it’s hard to believe, but I went to the top and went on to get the win over John Burdette. John has been out of racing for a couple of years and was driving Mike McPherson’s car. We made a good race out of it and I sure enjoyed pal’ing around with him in the pits like the old days!
Saturday we went to the Valley and started 5th in the heat race. We managed to get to 3rd to start us 5th in the feature. Made it to 3rd and raced Ricky Venham for 2nd but could not make the pass. So we settled for the 3rd. I was disappointed with our run and hope to do better down there next Saturday.
Just wanted to mention that some guests showed up at the races this weekend and it was good to see them there. Loretta Shortridge, Michael and Michelle Willoughby, Dave Nicholson and his wife. Also keep longtime friend Steve Armentrout and Hilton Wolfe in your prayers for they are dealing with health issues.
Need to thank Tod and the gang at Hassy Chassis. Also need to thank Tim Cooper and Jason Canepari for their support thru the week in garage and at the track. Friday we went to Skyline and dad drew us a #35 pill. Due to a scratch, we were able to start 3rd in the heat. By running the bottom we were able to get the heat race win. This would start us on the outside front row of the feature. We took the early lead, but Rick Aukland managed to get by. We ran 2nd for a while until Jeremy Berwanger and I made it a race for 2nd. We wound up finishing 3rd. I was very pleased with the car on this slick track although we didn’t win. Jason is already planning on what changes we will be making for next Friday.
Saturday K-C Speedway was paying $1,000 to win, so we headed that direction. We set 2nd fast time and started 5th in the dash to finish 4th. Started 4th in the feature and took the lead around the halfway point and went on to get the win and the all important $1,000 check. The car handled great and the win capped off a super night.

I want to wish my Mom a Happy Birthday this coming week.
Friday we headed to Elkins for the first Road Warrior
Tour race. They had 17 cars and we set 3rd
fast time. We started the pole of the 3rd
heat and battled for the lead to come up short and wound
up finishing 3rd. Started 9th in
the feature and worked our way from the tail twice to
finish a disappointing 7th. I felt like we
had a top 3 car and a 7th place driver.
Saturday I headed to Zanesville to run Ed Watson’s late
model. I was disappointed in our run and we didn’t make
the show. Since I was running the late model, I hired
good friend, Greg Schilling, to drive the mod. His
brother Joe crew chief’ed and we all were hoping for a
good evening. Kim drew a good pill to start Greg 4th
in the heat. Greg had a slight throttle push at the
start of the race and this got him smacked around on the
track which eventually cut a left rear tire down. This
forced him to start 12th in the consi. As
they threw the green Greg was making a pass on the 2
cars in front of him. Apparently they did not like
getting passed and he got tagged coming down the front
chute and got yet another left rear flat. I hated the
way the evening went for Greg, for I believe he would
have done well if it had not been for the 2 flat tires.
Sunday we headed to Tyler for Road Warrior #2. They had
27 modifieds and we set 4th quick time. We
won the 1st heat with a left front flat and
started the pole of the feature. We led the first 27
laps due to a single file restart before any laps were
in the books. There was a caution with 3 laps to go and
I managed to finish 5th. This made for an
extremely quiet trip home. Sorry to all of those that I
disappointed!
This week we plan to go to Skyline on Friday and to K-C
on Saturday for $1,000 to win.

Friday
we left Parkersburg in the rain and headed back to
Hilltop Speedway. To our surprise it was sunny and blue
skies, which made for a really nice evening. But our
racing wasn’t as good as the weather. During
qualifications our car stumbled and was quitting and we
got 16th fastest. Came in and changed the
fuel filter and cleaned up the distributor cap and went
out for the heat starting 4th. They watered
the track and it was greasy and we finished 4th.
This forced us into the consi, starting on the pole. We
didn’t even make it a lap and the car stumbled and quit
forcing us to drop to the infield. We later found that
we had water in our fuel tank.
Saturday we went to Tyler County and were sitting in the
chute for hot laps and it started raining. After an
attempt of getting the track ran in, rain came again and
forced them to cancel.
Sunday, Midway Speedway was paying $1,000 to win and we
headed that direction. We set fast time with a 15.15 and
had to start 6th in the dash. We wound up
finishing 5th and this started us 5th
in the feature. Midway is always a tough track to pass
on and I was being surprisingly patient. We finally made
it to 3rd, but the leaders were a straight a
way ahead. When the checkered fell we were within 2 car
lengths of them and we managed a 3rd place
finish.
This weekend we will be at Elkins on Friday for a Road

to Tyler on Sunday for another Road Warrior Tour race.
Hope to see you there!

Happy Mothers Day to my mom and all of the other mom’s
out there!
Friday, Mother Nature was doing her best to win. All
area tracks was cancelled due to rain. But we found
Hilltop Speedway in Millersburg, OH still racing. So we
headed north and they had 34 modifieds. I drew a pill #2
to start us on the pole of the 1st heat race.
Needless to say we were sitting in the chute and Mother
Nature caught up to us. Rained out again!
Saturday we headed back down to Ohio Valley for double
features. We started on the pole and ran 2nd
most of the race to Rod Sayre, but we kept the pressure
on & eventually made the pass and went on to get the
win. In the regular show, we started 3rd in
our heat race and finished 2nd. Kim did the
redraw and got us the outside pole. We took the early
lead and led the first 18 laps. But Andre Layfield
caught up to us in lap traffic and passed me off of turn
4 and we wound up finishing 2nd. I’m
learning, “If you ain’t first, 2nd ain’t that
bad!”
This weekend we will be going to Skyline on Friday and
to K-C on Saturday for $1,000 to win.

Update #7
Race #11 & #12
By: Kenny JohnsonDate: 5-5-08
Friday we went to Skyline despite what Mother Nature
looked like. We got our hot lap session in and were
sitting in the chute for our heat race when they called
the races for rain. So when we go back this week it will
be a complete new show.
Saturday we went to Ohio Valley Speedway. We set fast
time again and finished 2nd in the heat race.
But because of the pill draw we start the pole of the
feature. We were sitting in the chute again and the rain
started and they had to cancel the races. But since all
of the preliminary races were in, we will be having
double features next week. So next Saturday will be a
good night for fans to go and they can see 2 features
for the price of one.
Sunday I got a phone call from Ed Watson asking me if I
would drive his late model at Midway Sunday evening. Dad
and I went over and they had 21 late models. We set 3rd
fast time and then things went down hill from there. We
started 3rd in the heat and finished 7th
and then started 13th in the feature and
finished 13th. The car was extremely loose
and after the race I told Ed what I felt it needed. If I
get to drive it again we will need to make some changes,
it definitely is a good car and I hope I get to drive it
again sometime.
This weekend we will be going to Skyline on Friday and
Saturday we will be going back to the Valley for double
features. Hope to see you there!

Update #6 By: Kenny
Johnson,28 April 2008
Friday we went back to Skyline hoping to better our last
weeks finish. We made a few changes and the first was to
find someone else to draw a pill besides me. Dad picked
this week’s pill and started me one row closer which
wasn’t much better but he’s not fired yet. Started 6th
in the heat and finished 3rd in a 3 way
battle for the win with Booger Garnes and Mark Dickson.
Started 7th in the feature and moved to 4th
but didn’t have anything for the top 3 and I faded
enough that on the last lap we got passed to finish 5th
in the feature. We chose to stay after the races and try
some things out. I made several laps and then Jason
Canepari got in it and made some laps and last but not
least Dad got in it. For not having been in a car for
several years he showed he still has it in him. But I
think next time we’ll get him a few cushions so he can
see over the dash. LOL. He looked like a little kid
sitting in there.
Saturday we went to Ohio Valley Speedway. We set fast
time and won the first heat. After the heat they have a
redraw for the top 2 finishers and Kim drew our pill to
start us 4th in the feature. On the first lap
outside pole sitter, Doug Henry, broke. So, on the next
restart I started on the outside pole. We took the lead
on lap 2 and never looked back. The car was absolutely
awesome and I just love the Valley! Tod and Tony from
Hassy Chassis made it down to be there for our first win
of the year.
Along with Hassy Chassis and Racersmate, I’d like to
thank K-Graphics, Dickson Racing Shocks, Balderson
Construction, H&S Construction, Laurita Excavating,
Zemba Bros., Gene’s Trailer Sales, Billy Lloyd Racing
Engines, WOC Designs & Billy Joe and Wanda Hammett. Also
need to thank Jason Canepari and Tim Cooper for all of
their help and dedication to making us a winning team.
Without the 2 of them it would be nearly impossible to
race!
This weekend we will be going to Skyline on Friday and
Saturday we will be taking the mod to Zanesville where I
will also be driving a late model. I just love pulling
double duty, but if I don’t do well in either car, that
just means I will be double aggravated!

Update #5
Race: Skyline Speedway Opener
4/18/08
Track: Skyline Speedway By: Kenny
Johnson,21 April 2008
Thursday we were invited to South High School to the
Vocational Technical Center along with Greg Mitchell and
also a person from the Admissions office of Ohio
Northwestern University. ONU offers degrees in high
performance motorsports. It was a fun day and the kids
seem to enjoy the break from school.
Friday we went to Skyline Speedway for their season
opener. I started the night off with a #50 pill pull.
That started us 8th in the 2nd
heat race. We made it to a disappointing 5th
place finish. This started us 14th in the
feature and Jason made several changes. The groove
appeared to be the bottom, but our car would not go on
the bottom like it needed to. So I chose to go high and
the car started advancing. We made it to 3rd
and were close to passing for 2nd, but the
checkered kept us from making the pass. I was very
please with the way the car drove. Still need to work on
making it go on the bottom.
Saturday nights racing was a rain out. This weekend is
undecided at this time. Keep checking the web site for
schedule updates. I want to thank Wayne Cornell for
designing and maintaining the web site. If anyone needs
a site for their business or personal use, please give
Wayne a call.
Along with our existing sponsors, we also picked up H&S
Construction. They are building my 40’x60’ garage and
should be complete by mid May. I can’t wait, nor can Kim
so she can park her car in the garage!

Update #4
Race: Tyler Co. Opener
4/5/08
Track: Tyler Co. Speedway By: Kenny
Johnson,7 April 2008
Well I was counting on Mother Nature helping me out and canceling this weekend, but instead she decides to give Tyler County Speedway a break and allow them to get in their season opener. Tim Cooper and I finished the car up Saturday afternoon and we headed for Tyler. Car count was down for the season opener compared to past years. I believe they only had 13 modifieds. We set fast time with a 14.18, but we had to start 5th in the heat due to the roll of the dice. We came from 5th to 2nd in the heat race which started us 3rd in the feature. Dave Defibaugh took the early lead and we moved into 2nd and were able to hang on to a 2nd place finish. A respectable run, but we need to make some minor adjustments to be able to run with the leader.
This weekend it appears we would be going back to Tyler on Saturday, but at this time do not know what we'll on Friday, possibly Elkins for their season opener. Keep checking the web site for updates.
I Need to give thanks to Hassy Chassis, Racersmate, Dickson Racing Shocks, K-Graphics, Laurita Excavating, Gene’s Trailer Sales, Zemba Bros., Balderson Construction & Jason Canepari & Tim Cooper for the hard work and dedication.

Modified Magizine - March 2008
Kenny Johnson "Two-time AMRA Road Warrior
Champion and 2001 AMRA National Champion"
"If you aint first...you are last"--Kenny
Johnson
"He's a guy I'd pay to watch to
race."--unknown AMRA competitor
By Scott Wolfe
Three Wide Media
For years, 39-year old Kenny Johnson of Mineral Wells,
West Virginia dreamed of becoming a late model
champion. When the finances of running his own late
model team crumbled, Johnson quit racing.Quit,
theoretically that is.He simply walked away from the
sport that he loved. If he couldn't do it right, the
Two-time AMRA (American Motor Racing Association) Road
Warrior Tour Champion and 2000 National AMRA Champion
decided he wouldn't race at all.
That was the fall of 1998.A month later, two friends
came along and offered Johnson not just one ride, but
two. Veteran Late Model driver Jr. Simmons offered a
ride in his car and the other offer was in Tommy
Powell's modified.
Said Johnson, "It's funny how things work out.Quitting
was a hard decision, but I knew I couldn't do it right
on my own finances. One day I was out of racing, and a
few weeks later I had two cars.I never missed a race."
Since that fateful winter, Johnson has driven late
models, semi-lates, street stocks, pure stocks, and
modifieds. With 23 years of experience, the veteran is
versatile and is able to squeeze the most out of even
the most rugged jalopies. But it was that 1999 season
and his first experience in a modified that changed
Johnson's career.
"Jr. and I parted ways in the late model. I found
driving a modified somewhat challenging," noted Johnson.
"Tommy bought a new car in 2000 and we literally set the
world on fire.Shirley Paul Keffer came aboard to help
us and we put together one of those dream seasons. We
won 24 features in several different states and won the
AMRA National Championship."
"Every year we set our goals high.In order to be
successful, you have to set them high. After a 24-win
season, you say to yourself, 'we did it once, we can do
it again'; but it just doesn't happen that way.It
seems every season is depressing after that one,"
laughed Johnson in a tongue-in-cheek fashion.
"But really now, modified racing is so competitive.Every year you have some driver who excels. 2000 just
happened to be my year.I think I have a few good
seasons left in me though," said Johnson. "Racing is my
passion."
Although he hasn't yet replicated the 2000 season,
everyone in modified racing now knows Johnson by name.He is the man to beat.Overall,
he has won over 50 modified features and 14 late model
mains.
Going on the road is tough. Especially for a working
man.Fortunately, the mechanical designer for Aker-Kvaerner Engineering has worked his way into
management in the drafting engineering department after
19 years of service.
Doing a lot of work with CAD programming, Johnson has
had a big part in the design of the DuPont plant near
Washington, WV. His hard work there has allowed him to
take off early a "time or two" during the racing season
to get to the distant venues of the AMRA tour.
Johnson almost pulled off what no other driver has done
in the 18 year existence of AMRA--win the National Title
and Road Warrior Tour in the same year. When he won the
National points title (2000), he was second in Road
Warrior Tour points, just 22 out of first. When he won
the 2001 Road Warrior Title, he was second in National
Points, just two points away from being champion.
The Road Warrior tour is a touring group of the AMRA
elite, featuring many of the best drivers in the nation,
especially those from the Midwest. The group, featuring
the RWT "warriors" vs the local top guns, runs nearly
every week at a different track in several Midwestern
states, while at the same time recording National points
at as many as 20 different sanctioning tracks.
The AMRA is big in Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky.
Stars like Kenny Johnson keep the series strong.
"Winning fans over with his outgoing personality and
'stand on the gas' driving style, Kenny has a loyal
following wherever he races," noted AMRA publicist and
race director Steve Davis."Seemingly fearless behind
the wheel, he prefers running the extreme high line that
few would even consider to attempt. In what I would
consider an ultimate compliment, I overheard a fellow
competitor say "He's a guy I would pay to watch race".
He's that impressive and that exciting."
"Up until recently I had the 'If you aint first, you are
last' attitude," chuckled Johnson."I had that motto
long before Ricky Bobby (Talladega Nights). In some ways
it contributed to my success, but at other times I
crashed out of the race going for first when I should
have settled for second.I have adjusted that motto
just a little to -- 'If you aint first, it aint that
bad', and as a result it has really made me a better
driver."
"But, I aint good at what I call 'settling'.If I'm
'settling" for position, I feel like I don't have that
drive to win.It is hard to tell myself that it's ok
NOT to win."
Although Johnson sees himself as "mellowing some", fans
probably don't notice.One K-C Raceway fan in
particular noted, "I don't know how he makes that thing
stick. He defies the law of gravity."
Johnson, known as the "Southside Flyer" and simply "KJ",
hasn't re-written the physics books yet, but sometimes
it seems that way.He flat-foots his Hassey Chassis
House Car around the upper boundaries of a cushion,
where the common man seldom ventures."KJ" is a modern
day explorer, and shows no fear.
The competitive spirit has always been the driving force
in Kenny Johnson. At age six he knew he wanted to be a
racer. No venues for young racers were available
locally, so Johnson opted for pee wee football. That
competitive desire to compete and win followed Johnson
throughout high school where he excelled on the gridiron
until his graduation in 1986.
“I played varsity football and raced at the same time,”
asserted KJ.“When football season rolled around, I
didn’t have much time.I’d play football on Friday and
race on Saturday.”
Johnson's racing sometimes looks like a perfectly
orchestrated football play, where the aggressive Johnson
follows his blockers until just the right moment, then
jukes and jives through the pack like an elusive
halfback.
Kenny's dad Gene Johnson was a pretty good race driver
himself.Today, he is Kenny's number one fan, and at
one time never missed a race. The elder Johnson was then
stricken with Parkinson's disease, and although he still
makes many of the races, sometimes the longer hauls are
just too much.
"Dad is my number one fan," asserted Johnson."Then it
is a close second between Mom (Frances) and my
girlfriend Kim.My family is very supportive of me."
Often known as the race track practical joker, Gene
Johnson is well-known across the Ohio Valley.A young
Kenny Johnson thought he was the brunt of one of the
jokes when Dad Gene asked, "Do you want a street car or
a race car for your (16th) birthday?"Kenny replied
without an ounce of serious thought, "A race car!"
"Here I was, a naive 15-year old someday wishing I could
be a race car driver," chuckled Johnson, "and bam, they
surprised me.Right there in the garage was a great
looking race car."
That was 1986 between Johnson's Junior and Senior year. The car was a 3275 pound semi-late, a former Doll
brothers' car driven by the legendary Earl Hill.In
1990, Johnson moved up to late model and in 1995 he was
the Ohio Valley Speedway (Lubeck, WV) late model track
champion.
“I remember my first win at Ohio Valley Speedway in the
Late Model and my first championship. Those were two
special times for me,” noted KJ.“Another memorable
race that stands out was in the modified in 2000 when I
won the Balderson Dodge 40 at Zanesville. I came from
18th to win the $2,500.“
Johnson’s road to success was not easy. Many hurdles
stood in the way of success. A devastating fire burnt
Johnson's garage to the ground three weeks before the
1992 racing season began.Friends, family, and fellow
racers came together to get Johnson on the track again
later that season.
One of Johnson's greatest moments was also one of his
biggest disappointments. In August 2007, Johnson came
up just 8 feet short of winning the American Heritage
101 at Brushcreek Motorsports Complex. "It was a thrill
to run second, but a big disappointment to know I lost a
chance at a Harley Davidson."
The winner (Steve Arpin) had a choice of winning
$10,000 or the Harley. “I really wanted that Harley.”
In 2003-2005, Johnson ran his own team, then ran the
Hassey Chassis House car of Todd Buckhalter in 2006.In
early 2007 Johnson was offered the full-time ride in
John Cornell's Rocket Chassis Late Model, but after
two-months of chasing his dream, Johnson felt he wasn't
doing his owner justice.
Johnson had nearly always been in the top ten, but his
"If your not first" motto stood in the way. Johnson
likes to be number one. His pursuit of being number one
is what drives him.
Buckhalter quickly gained wind of Johnson's
availability. Johnson explained, "I told Todd that I
couldn't afford to do ANYTHING.He said, 'you don't
have to, I'll send you a car'." And thus the Johnson was
back in the Hassey House Car.
"We are always trying something new with the car.We
are the Research and Development team of modified
racing," laughs Kenny. "We are starting to sell a few
cars here in the area because of our success. And all
the winnings go right back into the car." "As part of
our partnership, I offer set-ups to other Hassey Chassis
drivers. If they have issues, I'm glad to help."
The Hassey Chassis is fitted with a 421 Billy Lloyd
Racing Engine and maintained by Johnson, Jason Canepari,
and Tim Cooper with sponsorship from Racersmate, DRS
(Dickson Racing Shocks), Keith Emrick of K-Graphics,
Gene Casto, and American Racer Tires.
In lieu of chasing points, Johnson plans on running more
of the big money shows in 2008. Some of his favorite
races of interest are the Bluegrass Bash, Volusia Co.
Winter Nationals, The Heritage at Brushcreek, and
Stateline (New York).
"Racing is a funny thing.It's like a legal drug.I
can't imagine doing anything else. When I think of
spending money on a new washer or something around the
house, I just cringe.But I don't hesitate spending a
couple hundred bucks on the race car. I’m hooked. I
wanna race till I die if I can. Racing will always be in
my future."
And for racing fans, that is a good thing. The "KJ's" of
the sport keep it exciting and help make modified racing
one of the nation's most popular racing series.
Kenny Johnson--He is definitely a "guy I'd pay to watch
race!"
Update #3
Race:
Bluegrass Bash3/29/08
Track:
Western Kentucky Speedway By: Kenny
Johnson,30 March 2008
After getting back from Florida and assessing the damage
to the car, Hassy decided to build a new car. It was
down to the wire for us to finish it to go to the
Bluegrass Bash, which paid $6,000 to win. The race
format was that they would have an open practice session
on Friday night and Saturday they would go right into
qualifying. We opted to leave Friday evening and miss
hot laps. Now with having a brand new car we kind of
second guessed our decision, but after we qualified, we
felt confident that we had the car right. We were 3rd
fast in our group and start 3rd in the heat.
We took over 2nd place and started chasing
down the leader, which was Dave Hess Jr. His crew was
telling him to stay high, which of course was my line.
In the end Dave held onto the win and we finished 2nd.
This would start us 16th in the 40 lap
feature. The track was rough so we knew we would have to
race smart and avoid cautions. I slowly worked my way
around cars. From 16th to around 7th
or so was the toughest to pass. But once we got to 7th
they got easier. We passed Dave Hess Jr. for 3rd
and Denny Schwartz and Kevin Weaver was 1st &
2nd. Now during all of this our car was
overheating and I was spending a lot of time watching my
gages. I was pressuring the 2nd place car and
was just about to pass him when I spun out off of turn
4. I restarted the car and the temperature gage
increased and under caution I could not get it to go
back down, so I pulled to the infield for a 13th
place finish. I was aggravated at myself for spinning
out and also concerned as to why I am fighting heating
problems. But all in all I was very pleased with the new
car and feel we will be very competitive this year.
I need to thank Tod Buckhalter and all of the guys at
Hassy Chassis that put this car together. Also need to
thank Tim Cooper and Jason Canepari for working hard
this week to finish the car up. Dad made the road trip
this weekend and has now gotten the racing fever for
2008.
At this time I have no plans for this coming weekend. I
will have to see what this week brings and what I find
with our overheating problem

Update #2
Race: Florida Speedweeks 2/10/08 - 2/16/08
Track: Volusia & East Bay By: Kenny
Johnson,19 Feb 2008
Our first race night in Florida was Sunday, Feb. 10th
at Volusia County Speedway. They had 90 + cars. Tim
Cooper drew us a good pill to start us 3rd in
our heat race. They were taking the top 2 out of the
heat. We finished 2nd and this started us 14th
in the feature. Made our way to 8th & was
attempting to pass NASCAR racer Ken Schrader on the
outside of turn 4. As we came down the front chute he
was unaware that I was there and I ended up with a left
front flat tire. Came in the pits and got it changed and
went to the tail. Came from the tail back to finish 12th.
We were happy with the first night.
Night #2 wasn’t as good. We got caught up in a wreck in
our heat and had to go to the tail & came back to 4th
and the 3rd place car checked up in front of
me. I hit them and that spun me out, so I just went to
the pits. We were starting 8th in the B-main
and I felt good about winning it to put ourselves in the
A-main. But this is where things turned bad. We entered
turn 1 and I saw a lane open on the bottom. I was wide
open when the outside pole sitter spun and attempted to
do a 360 and came right down into us & the outcome was
not good. It did some major frame damage and body
damage. At first look I was ready to pack it in and head
back north. But Tim Cooper, Sean Schobelock and Tod
Buckhalter felt that it could be fixed enough to
continue racing. So the next day we found a couple of
trees and the guys pushed and pulled and cut some tubing
out and put some tubing in and before you know it, it
was ready to race. Tuesday night’s race was cancelled
due to rain. So Wednesday we headed to East Bay Raceway
Park.
Our first race there was on Thursday and things started
off kind of rocky. Our hot lap session, the car would
not stay running, it was running out of fuel. Come to
find out, the force of the wreck caused the fuel pick up
hose to go to the front of the fuel cell and curl up.
Got that fixed and in qualifying we spun the left rear
caliper and had no brakes. They were doing group
qualifying and we were 7th fastest. Started 7th
in the heat and came up to 4th and was racing
1st, 2nd and 3rd. It
made for a really good race but we finished 4th
and had to start 8th in the B-main. They were
taking 4 and we finished 4th. Started 23 rd
and passed about 4 cars in the first couple of laps and
the car lost all electrical power and that knocked us
out of the feature. As it turned out we had a problem
with the battery terminal which probably stemmed from
the wreck.
The next night we were 5th fastest in our
group and started 5th in our heat. I could
not go anywhere in our heat and we wound up finishing 7th.
This put us in the C-main and we finished 2nd.
That put us in the B-main staring 18th and
they were taking 4. The race was set for 15 laps but on
lap 6 there was wreck that took sometime to clean up, so
they cut the race back to 12 laps. We made it up to 5th
and were right on the 4th place car when they
threw the checkered. So we didn’t make the A-main.
On Saturday they line up all the races from the points
of the first 2 nights. We were 24th out of 94
cars. Started 3rd in the heat and finished 3rd.
Started 6th in the B-main and they were
taking 4. For whatever reason the car would not hook up
at all & we fell backwards and I eventually pulled off.
So we did not make the big race. I’m not sure where the
car is set up wise after the wreck. Now that we are back
I’ll have to get it up on the set up stands and see how
the car really is.
I’d like to thank everyone that helped get us down there
and also those that helped. The Schilling Brothers was
at Volusia for 3 days giving us a hand and keeping us
laughing! Also, Tod Buckhalter of Hassy Chassis, Tim
Cooper and fellow racer from Chillicothe, Sean
Schobelock. Also giving a hand was former mod racer Rick
Logan and his crew member Dave.
On other news from Florida a Mid Ohio Valley racer won
the big show at East Bay, winning $8,000. Louie
Krushansky and Team #23 put WV on the map in Florida
Speedweeks. It was a great race to watch and helped make
my trip worth while to see Louie and his team in victory
lane. It proves that our area has just as tough of
competition as anywhere.
Providing the car checks out ok and we get everything
back together we plan on going to Western Kentucky
Speedway on March 22nd for $6,000 to win.

Getting Ready To Go To Florida!
By: Kenny
Johnson
Date: 1-15-0 8
Well the winter months are passing us by and we
leave for Florida in less than 4 weeks. Our plan is to leave
on Feb. 9th and we will be racing at Volusia on
Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday we will drive down
to East Bay Raceway and practice. Then we will race
Thursday, Friday & Saturday. The car is nearly ready and we
will be doing decals at K-Graphics next week. The engine was
freshened up by Billy Lloyd at the end of 2007 and only has
about 4 races on it, so we should be good to go there. We
also have a 34’ enclosed trailer which will make it nice for
our long road trips. Tim Cooper is organizing it now. Jason
Canepari will be setting the car up this weekend with the
new quick change rearend, which will really make it nice for
changing gears. We are still driving the Hassy Chassis House
Car owned by Tod Buckhalter and we are still running DRS
Dickson Racing Shocks.
I am still looking for sponsors and I am looking
forward to a great 2008 racing season! I am also having a
garage built over the months of Feb. & March. I am utilizing
H&S Construction, Zemba Bros. & Steve Balderson
Construction.
Just to give you an update on dad, last week he
had a stress test that came back abnormal. Monday of this
week he had a heart catheterization and found that 2 of the
by passes had blockages. One bypass required 2 stints and
the other required one stint. He should be good to go. The
Dr. said that the chance of blockages taking place in
bypasses is 5%. I guess Dad is special. LOL!He’s coming
home today and the Dr. said he should be good to go!
